Anything like those towns closer to Southington? I've heard Cheshire, Berlin, even Wethersfield? Cheshire and Berlin seem a little close to Meriden..no offense but I've been to Meriden and would like to avoid having to go there for grocery shopping or anything like that.
Is Farmington perhaps our best bet? There are so many small towns that its hard to know what we might be missing, would love any help, thanks!
ETA that schools are our #1 priority but we would also like a pretty town with lots of parks and rec type stuff if possible

LMAO, you lived in brooklyn for 5 years and u dont want to go grocery shopping in Meridan??? lol, Meridan is THAT bad? lol, wow..
but anyways. If ur that scared of low income ppl, then maybe u should try southbury/middlebury. its both are beautiful towns, and southbury has its own downtown with a shaws and stop and shop. Southbury is probably the lowest affluent town on the Connecticut snob scale, but if u like to chill wit snobs, middlebury is the place to be. Southbury and Middlebury have regional schooling.

Farmington
You mentioned your mom lives in Farmington - I grew up in Farmington and I really enjoyed it. Farmington is on the top 10 for the best high schools in the state and nationally it is always ranked well. It depends where you live in Farmington, regarding problems with Route 4. If you live in Cope Farms, Tall Timbers, Portage Crossing, etc, you can avoid Route 4 and get to Southington from backroads.
I do understand your concerns about not wanting to be too close to areas where you would not feel comfortable based on experience. I currently live in NJ now and live in a nice area, but work with high risk students in not such a great area. There are really nice towns surronding these not so great areas, but after my students have descirbed to me what happens in their towns, to an extent it does cross over to the surronding towns.

Since you will be going to both Southington and Hartford, I'm shocked no one has mentiond Rocky Hill yet. Nice town, good schools, easy access via 91/691 to where you have to go.
Rocky Hill also has it's own "shopping" areas along the Silas Dean and Maple Ave and of course all the new stores on the Berlin Turnpike.
Southern Wethersfield (which borders Rocky Hill) is also a nice option.
IMHO if you have the opportunity to get into Hartford other than the West side of I84, do so.

These are great places to live. If thinking these are nice places to live than by all means call me snooty, too

I agree. Call me snooty too then.

Yes, Merid en is crummy and I know exactly what the OP is talking about. I used to hate having to shop at S&S on East Main in Merid en.
It's not about "low income people". It's about a culture that represents a lifestyle that most folks DO NOT want for their families.
Perhaps someday you'll understand that not everyone wants to be around the "ghetto culture" for a reason. Yea I grew up in Waterbury, it was my hometown - always will be. BUT just because I grew up a certain way, doesn't mean I'm "all for" being around it now. If anything it's the fact that I DID grow up there and experience the crime, drugs, stressed out life etc that makes me not like it more so now.
Maybe when you get older, graduate, if/when you have a family and a good paying job it'll click.

Rocky Hill is a good suggestion. We lived there in a crummy apartment until we moved into our house, but the town itself is very nice. The library is great.

Yep, I jokingly call it my husband's bachelor pad since he moved out here first and lived in it alone for a 5 months. When I saw it for the first time, I felt so bad for him!

Honestly? Why not just live IN Southington? My understanding is that the schools are pretty good. I don't live there but have some friends who have/had kids in them. They were all satisfied. Then it's an easy commute for the dh too.

I don't understand wut ur saying in the first line. "Its not about low income people". And the fact that there are people who cant stand to be around poor people is plain snooty. So, as u suggested, I will use the word "snooty".
And I don't know why u think I would ever want everyone around ghetto culture. Hip hop is a movement-to move poor folks out the ghetto. And if ur not poor, you need not be involved. Trust me, when I see rich kids at school dress like their hood, I quickly shun them and remind them that they dont kno wut their doing. You may not understand this as hip-hop may have been after your youth.
And J, I dont like when u correlate my age with inexperience. If you havent noticed, I try to give u the last word in my threads. Unless of course theres an underlining disagreement where my point really needs to come across. So dont make it seem that u are more knowing because u are wise. U and the other adults already have the respect on the floor (thread)
Dont u remember the election? lol

I really don't know anyone who "can't stand to be around poor people." Most people in CT aren't independently wealthy.
