I'm looking for some really good doughnuts. Do any exist anymore? I'm not interested in Dunkin', Doughnut Delight, or Krispy Kreme. Something along the lines of what Correlli's in Stamford or Devore's in Fairfield or Pacelli's(long gone) in Bridgeport served. The supermarket bakeries(BigY/ShopRite/S&S) are all-right in a pinch, but still not quite what i'm looking for. Does anyone here have a favorite independent shop in the FFC/NHC region? TIA.

*Thanks to someone on another forum here for the idea of posting this.

In Stratford in the same mini-mall as the Chase Bank (Barnum & Main Street junction), there is a wonderful bakery. I can't think of the name right now, but it's between the Chase and the Starbucks. My Austrian friend was raving about their pastries which I think is a great recommendation, Austria has the most amazing pastry shops I've ever seen. She particularly liked the doughnuts.

Have you tried the Donut King on corner of Main Street and Wilcoxson in the Paradise Green? I'm not sure if it is still there, but was pretty good.

Wow, Devores and Pacelli's. That brings back memories. They were great. I can not think of anywhere that still has donuts like them. Jay

My friend rants and raves about Neil's Donuts in Wallingford. Made in front of you the old fashioned way and he says they just dissolve in your mouth. I guess I will have to try these orgasmic donuts.

Sugar Shack in Manchester - they actually make them in-house and won some kind of CT Magazine award for best doughnut.

I know it's not close, but its' all I have.

BTW I know what you mean about fresh, good doughnuts.

Ambrosia Bakery. They were really good when they were in Fairfield. They expanded to Stratford and Milford and that's when the quality went way down.

Doughnut Delight, now named Donut Inc. It's owned by that nitwit Costello who ran for mayor. Costello's motto has always been "get it as cheaply as possible". When someone eats his doughnuts, or looks at that ridiculous thing on top of his head, we understand exactly what "You get what you pay for" truly means.

Yeah, it doesn't look as though anyone makes them like that anymore.

Ambrosia Bakery in Fairfield is now under new ownership and has changed its name to Adams. My family goes there for baked goods, but mostly breads. It is pretty good. We get their rye bread which is good but not great (anyone remember Ziesler's in Bridgeport?). It is still better than anything you can get around here in Glastonbury. I have not found a good bakery near here which is probably the only thing I can say I miss. That and a good New York deli. Jay

Lakeside Diner in Stamford serves up an AMAZING, classic brown sugar donut. You could eat like 5 in one sitting...they are delicious. Lakeside is one of my fav spots in Stamford. Classic place--makes you feel like you are on vacation.
