Can you live downtown on a non-profit salary?
Hey, I am considering a move to work at a museum on Hartford. Is it going to be possible to find an apartment (1 BR) for $900 a month? Any suggestions on how to find them? Craigslist.org doesn't seem that great...

You want to live IN Hartford for 900 a month?
Yup, their would be rentals at that price their.
Just physically go their first and make sure it's a safe area.

Is $900 a lot? Is there a chance I could find a decent 1BR for $750?

If you want an apartment that is actually in downtown, $900 might get you a studio but that's probably it. If you look more in the west end of Hartford and in West Hartford, you should be able to find something for $900. Near the end of last year I was looking in West Hartford and saw a few nice 1brs for $825-$850 that included heat and hot water. Apartments.com lists mostly managed complexes but also shows results from the Hartford Courant. You could try there in addition to looking on craigslist.

It's a decent amount for central CT; it won't get you 1400sqft of luxury condo but you won't have to be in the ghetto either. You would be able to find a decent apartment in the west end, West Hartford, Newington, Manchester, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, etc. Basically any of Hartford's suburbs except for Avon/Canton/Simsbury.

I don't want to be in the burbs, just Hartford. Frog Hollow and Parkville look interesting. Any thoughts on those neighborhoods?

$900 a month should be able to get you a place in Frog Hollow or Parkville. I'm not sure what the best way to find them would be though, particularly if you said you're not having much luck on Craigslist. That would be my normal suggestion, as well as the Hartford Courant classifieds. If you have some time, drive around the areas and look for "For Rent" signs, that might actually be the best way.

Yeah, Frog Hollow and Parkville are interesting-I must ask, have you visited those areas?
If you're living alone, you might want to stay towards/in the West End. You could get something near the law school in your budget, I would think.

Sounds like you WANT interesting. I enjoyed my time living in Asylum Hill, although I had to get used to a certain amount of panhandling, car break-ins, and occasional raucous behavior. Landlords in these neighborhoods aren't the craigslist type, so you'll probably have to call on classified listings. If you're interested in downtown, you might want to check out 250 Main Street, which due to its age is less expensive than the newer downtown developments. Have fun in Hartford. It is a great place for people without the big bucks and the non-profit world is welcoming to newcomers.
