It depends on your budget, but you could look for rentals around Walnut Hill Park if you want to be in New Britain. Neighboring towns like Bristol, Farmington, West Hartford, and Newington will also have rentals and are generally safer than NB itself. As a resident of NB, I would advise against renting near Myrtle St/North St/Beaver St etc. if safety is a concern.
Are you in the area currently? You will definitely want to drive around first before you rent and make sure the neighborhood is what you're looking for. And don't just go by pictures in the rental ads...I can't tell you how many apartments I looked at that had awful parking, tiny staircases, disgusting carpet, etc.

Thank you very much for the reply. Yes, i did visit the place recently, but somehow i did not like the environment. The whole place looked pretty old, and there were some homeless poeple around.
As far my budget goes, range of $700-$900 is pretty okay, as long as the area is good and safe, and the apartments are clean .
Do you know of any direct transportation to New York City, so i can commute on daily basis? I currently live in New jersey.

I am confused. Do you have a new job in New Britain? Why then would you be commuting to New York?
Commuting from New Britain to New York is not going to be easy. There are buses from Hartford but they can be expensive for a daily commute. They stop a lot and take a long time. Jay

There's really no easy way to make that work for both of you. Even at the halfway point the commutes will be much more than an hour each way. It would be better to live as close to NY as your budget allows and commute by car to New Britain.
How good is this job in New Britain? Because honestly, you'll be looking for another job in Fairfield County or NJ real soon if you have to make that commute.

Manhattan is over 100 miles from New Britain. You could live somewhere in between and commute in different directions. One option would be to live in the Danbury area. She could take a train into New York just over the NY line from Southeast Station or another nearby station to Grand Central. Your commute would be at least an hour and her about two hours.
Another option would be to live in Fairfield County near the New HAven line. You might consider Milford or Stratford. Your trip again would be about an hour and hers about 90 minutes. Check the schedules.
You could adjust either of thes options to reduce the travel time of one of you. I will warn you though, any closer to New York than Fairfield can get pricey though. Good luck, Jay

One of the towns on the Waterbury line might also make sense, and would be closer to New Britain. That'd be two hours (or more) for her, and 30-45 minutes for you.
You could also look at Bridgeport, though you have to choose your location very carefully, since much of the city is in rough shape and probably not what you're looking for. Still, there are some nice spots. Given your budget, it might work well and, since it's close to the halfway point, be a good compromise for your respective commutes. Driving to New Britain won't be too bad, and your wife can ride the train.

Not that Fairfield is much of a bargain, though.
If you want something affordable and close to Manhattan, then Stratford or Milford would probably suit your needs. I would suggest Bridgeport but I know very little about this city, and like New Britain, you really need to familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods to determine what area is safe (which Bridgeport does have a few of) and what isn't. In both cities you have some nice, well-kept areas and some areas that are terrible.
