Kid,
Glastonbury has plenty of diversity. I've lived in Glastonbury for 30 of my 43 years (old guy) and there was always a good mix of people. It's not East Hartford, but it certainly isn't Redding or Washington. My dad drives a school bus there and he see's a lot that the average Joe doesn't.

I still disagree. I've spent quite a bit of time in Glastonbury with former GHS students and lived there for a few months with my college roommate. Sorry but a town that is more than 90% white isn't "diverse." No, it's not 98% white like Washington or Redding but that doesn't make Glastonbury diverse.
Diverse - composed of distinct or unlike elements or qualities
Using this definition, Glastonbury doesn't fit with 9/10 of the people being white. That's the problem with CT as compared to the rest of the nation/world. We in this small state lack diversity in such a huge way (mostly in the suburbs) that what we think is diverse is laughable to some.
While it's a beautiful town with great schools, I would not move there if I were seeking diversity.

Look into the Berlin, Kensington or Newington areas. I don't know how diversified they are with regard to ethnicity, so that would be something you would have to look into. Price wise, these areas are within your range and the further you get towards Meriden, Southington, Cheshire, Wallingford, the lower the prices will become although Cheshire can be pricey. Out of those 4 places I just mentioned, Meriden would be where you would find lots of children within your ethnicity parameters. Meriden gets a really bad rap and there are some really great areas there; I live in one of them. Good luck with your search.

Our kids are small and will be in K and 1st grade. We are African and our kids are looking for kids who look like them even though they have friends from across all races. Does such a town exist? Manchester came close but then someone said the schools were not that good and it is deteriorating in terms of crime. West Hartford had good schools but seemed pricy and it depends on where you are. South Windsor looked ok. Not as diverse and our fear is that its too close to the airport so could be noisy. It this right? We will be renting (or taking over someone's mortgage who would rather not sell (any takers?) for at least a year. If we play our cards right, we would buy in the same area in a year to avoid moving schools again. Our targeted buy would be to spend max $450K but the home must be modern and that is not until a year or so. Job is towards Springfield, MA. Any leads would be appreciated.

I would check out Windsor, CT. There are many African American families there and pretty much runs the whole gambit. I cant vouch for the school system though.

Windsor, CT would fit the bill, The poquonock elementary district is the one you would want to live in, and they aren't Excellent schools by any means, but they are safe and decent.
the area has a VERY high african american home owner percentage, so it would give you diversity and would be close for commuting to Springfield, MA. I wouldn't live any further south then hartford if commuting into Mass every day.

Perhaps in a few neighborhoods, but as kid pointed out, if you leave the north end its about all white. Also, fyi EH is still about 65% white so not even as diverse as you might think.

So in your view 65% white and 35% "other" isn't diverse? Would it be so if the figures were the other way around? The stats are what they are, if you don't like them, you don't have to live there... Not trying to be a pain, but CT has been this way for a long time, but it is slowly changing. There are many more minorities in Glast. then when I was a kid there.
The Indian and Chinese population in Glastonbury has exploded in the last 10 years or so...

I don't know anything about Glastonbury but if the town is THAT white, I can't believe people are misleading the OP saying it is diverse.
Tetto: Take it from someone who lived many places in 35 years rather than living in one small town in CT. Connecticut towns are not diverse. The wealth gap is evident along racial/ethnic lines.

Actually, according to informaiton on the Connecticut Economic Resource Center's website, out of the 33,318 residents in Glastonbury, just under 30,000 are white. So it is not 96% white. Jay

JayCT: I am actually laughing to myself here because you are still trying to make the argument that a town with such demographics is diverse! I am sorry if this comes across as rude but some need to get out more and see what real diversity is.
