Default deciding between west haven and milford

Here's the situation:
1. Will only need a temporary place from March to May
2. Will be working at the VA
3. Looking to spend in the 1500-2500 range/month
4. Wife drives a "nicer" car so safety is important

Right now looking at the beach area in Milford on either side of Silver Sands State Park vs. the 1st Ave. beach area in West Haven.

My questions are:
1. Would the commute be horrendous at 5pm back to Milford? 30-45+ minutes?
2. Is that corner of West Haven safe?
3. Are there other parts of town nice for walking and strolling (wife won't be working) that aren't on the beach? She can't stay indoors all day.

It would be too cold to swim obviously, so the surrounding community is important since the beach would only be something to look at.

Thanks in advance!

West Haven would be less expensive. Beach property would be cheaper because it's off-peak time, but i wouldn't know where you could look for something that is such a short-term rental. I'd suggest looking at the Woodmont section of Milford, or just over the Woodmont line in West Haven. It shouldn't take 30 minutes to get from anywhere in Milford to Campbell Ave. in West Haven.

thanks for such a quick reply. i actually found a couple of houses and just need to make a decision (one was by the audubon, the other a few blocks north of the silver sands, and the third in west haven). i'm in the unfortunate position of basically having to make a decision without even looking at the locations. to me, it's worth driving 15 minutes more from the VA if the location is better (but maybe not 30-45 min). but if they were pretty much the same types of locations, i'd just assume stay in west haven.

what concerns me about west haven is that if it is pretty much just industrialized along the beach, my wife is going to go stir crazy staying in the house. she needs to get out and walk. the owner in west haven assures me that the location is "nice". whatever that means.

The area in West Haven(Ocean Ave.) that is adjacent to the Woodmont borough of Milford, is much quieter and more residential than the Capt. Thomas Blvd./1st Ave. area.

I would vote for Milford, hands down. I used to live in Woodmont and it was wonderful to walk to the beach and nearby shops and restaurants. Plus it was very safe. I haven't lived in Milford for 10 years, but I used to commute to New Haven every day and the commute from exit 40 was good (10 minutes) until exit 43 at which point it would slow down to a stop. My guess is traffic has gotten worse in 10 years. If so, the back roads from Woodmont (Jones Hill Rd to Platt Ave to Elm St onto Campbell Ave) will have you at the VA in about 15 minutes.

If you're looking for safety, choose Milford. I live here and it's great! I'm sure you and your wife will like it too.
