Traffic: Milford to West Haven
I'll be commuting TO West Haven (VA hospital) in the morning around 6:30 AM and in the return direction to Milford around 5 pm.
My question is, in which direction is the traffic worse in the AM as well as PM? Is it worse coming into West Haven or towards NYC in the AM and vice versa? Trying to decide if it will be worth the headache. I'm kind of leaning towards not staying in West Haven if the commute isn't too bad though.

Your commute should be easy. You will be going against the traffic on 95. Milford to West Haven and back is a breeze

West Haven is right next to Milford (a small wedge of Orange separates the northern part), so your commute will not necessarily be bad. You may not even have to get on the highway depending where you live. I-95 is not bad through Milford or West Haven. In the morning I-95 northbound backs up heading into New Haven but the problems mostly occur after you would be getting off the highway for the VA. In the evening there will be traffic on I-95 southbound but it should not be an issue. Believe me, traffic here is nothing like you see in most other parts of the country. Jay

I beg to differ. I commuted from Stamford to New Haven and I had no choice but to take 95 (this was 3 years ago). The traffic was horrendous, at best, even going North in the morning it wasn't light. Milford was always one of the worst parts of the trip, as well as Norwalk. If there's an accident, you'll be there for an hour +. I agree that traffic here is not as bad as in Los Angeles or Atlanta but that doesn't mean it isn't an issue. 95 between NY and New Haven is one of the most traveled highways in the nation, so keep that in mind as you turn onto the on ramp.
My suggestion is to stay away from 95, especially during rush hour. Your stress level will be through the roof by the time you arrive home.

Kidyankee - The OP will be getting on I-95 in Milford and off in West Haven in the morning which is the opposite direction that you traveled. It has been my observation that this section of I-95 Northbound is not that bad. Issues really begin in West Haven approaching New Haven (Exits 44 and 45) and the Route 34/I-91 interchange. This is well past where the OP is going. Of course there are problems whenever there are accidents and I agree they should avoid I-95 if possible, but as commutes go, this one is not bad. Jay

Jay, I traveled NB from Stamford to New Haven for awhile. Traffic, back then, was a PITA. Might be better now since I haven't done that commute in awhile, but when I did it, the worst stretches NB were in Norwalk/Westport and Milford/Orange. I think a lot of it is the area near the Post Mall along Route 1 - very congested, lots of people exiting and entering. Again, might be better now since I haven't done that commute in a few years.

you guys are a great deal of help. trust me, growing up in SoCal, i'm aware how much bad traffic can dominate your life. looks like there are at least some side roads to navigate around the 95 as well. i do realize that there will be traffic, but as long as it's not like the 10/405 (in LA) i think commuting will be worth it for what we're looking for in a community.

Compared to LA's 405, traffic in Milford will seem like nothing. When gas prices shot up, so did ridership on the MTA. I think many people are still in that routine and it has, hopefully, eased 95 a bit.
