Hi Sunflowers! I moved to Monroe about 17 mos. ago from SC. I can't say enough good things about this town and residents! Monroe is a young, family oriented community where it's easy to make friends and the people are wonderful. There are tons of activities for kids of all ages. Monroe is a smaller scale Trumbull.
Monroe's new mill rate is 24.49. To figure out the real estate tax though, you will need the assessed values of the homes you are interested in buying. I mention this because the homes in Oxford are newer and therefore will be assessed higher. Personal property taxes don't vary very much within these two towns, not sure of the rate.
Oxford is beautiful and scenic. Very rural. You will get more house for your money there than in Monroe. For your budget you can get a brand new home in Oxford.
Have you also considered the Sandy Hook section of Newtown? You would be able to jump on 84. Close to Trumbull, great young community as well. Best of luck!

Feel free to PM me. I can answer any questions about Oxford school programs. I'm not sure what specifically you are interested in - after school care or the after school art/music/sports classes. Both types are available.

Oxford Elementary School
We are considering to buy in Oxford (relocating from South) but have heard mixed messages about the elementary school, in particular about some mold. Can someone please provide an overview on what is going on and if this is a good school. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. We have two young children who are involved in a lot of activities- does Oxford have enough activities going on for young kids? This is our greatest concern and it is holding us from making an offer on a house.
Thanks.

I believe this was a few years ago when we had unseasonably humid weather all throughout spring and summer. Lots of schools had this issue, including Oxford. It was cleaned up and taken care of, and should not be an issue anymore.
Lots of activities for young kids in Oxford, as there are many young families in town. There is a Parks and Rec Dept with a summer camp that occupies the time of over 300 kids each season. It's a nice, friendly town in the woods that is still in growing stages. It has been the fastest growing community in CT since 2003.

Oxford schools have a very good reputation. I have no idea about a mold issue but here is what I can tell you about CT schools. If there is problem, schools are very direct and forthcoming about it and are very quick to remediate any type of problem. As a matter of fact, kids safety is always a top priority.
Also, the media in this state is very good about reporting problems.
A quick google brought up no info for mold in Oxford schools. A phone call to the school should answer your concerns. You don't say what your source is?
I think Oxford is beautiful and yes, there are many activities for kids. It is a wonderful family oriented community.
However, if I thought there was a mold issue or lack of activities with any school or town, heck no, I would not buy a house in that district.

I'm aware of the small Center School having needed a million dollar mold abatement project. I don't have any links though.

I remember hearing about a lot of schools one year that did have some mold, but I can't find anything on it either. Must not be too big of a deal. I think it was the spring/summer that was very wet/humid.

My kids are in the Oxford school system and I love both the schools and the town. The parc and rec program is excellent providing plently of activities for kids of all ages and the other town programs such as soccer, baseball, scouting etc not only are well run, but have an excellent level of participation. Feel free to PM me with any questions about the town.
