there are a zillion independent ISP's out there (earthlink, etc) so deciding between them could be a chore. maybe you should start with the more obvious like ATT/Yahoo (formerly SBC, formerly SNET) or your cable company. Comcast i believe serves New Haven and offers cable modem access. ATT is the phone company in these parts and offers DSL.
i have DSL here in Middletown and i can say right now that the connection here is slower than what it was in Danbury (also ATT). this has to do with how close you are to the main office or 'hub' (not sure of the exact terminology). Cable modem speed can be affected by how many people in your immediate area have cable and how much they use it. so you may have to try both DSL and cable to get an idea of which will give you the fastest most reliable connection.

Default Internet Service Provider

My husband and I use AT&T as our provider. We have our cell phones and our land lines all with AT&T so everything comes on one bill. So far so good....little or no trouble with them. I do know folks who use the local cable company and have had problems. Price wise, I think you can also get a fairly good deal with the cable company...here where I live it is Cox Cable not sure what it is where you will be moving. Do some shopping and see who is offering the best deal then check their rep. for service, etc. Good Luck.

Also check on AT&T's Uverse, if it's available. It's their fiber optic based system (like Verizon FIOS). We have the U200 package with Internet and unlimited voice, and it's about $100. It's pretty much the same package as the cable company, but there are some additional features that I like (whole house DVR included, remote programming of the DVR, remote checking of voicemail, etc.).

For regular video conferencing, especially if you want good quality, then make sure you get a connection that is at least 3MB downstream and 1MB upstream. If you have less, you may be able to see them ok, but they may have a choppy image of you. And often the audio and video go out of sync.
