you will have a hard time finding ANYTHING for under 250K within an hour to NYC that ALSO has good schools and a walkable dowtown and school within distance of your home. I'd say it would be almost impossible.
You need to either move further than 1 hour from NY or give up good public schools.
If you found anything it would be around 1000 sq feet or less which would be tight for four people and likely require some work.

You would most likely need a car in CT as it is not as "public transportation friendly" as NY

I agree, in that price range it would be difficult. Southwestern Connecticut is one of the most expensive areas to live in the country. Some New Yorkers have moved up to Stratford which is more affordable but you are over an hour from NY. Same with the Danbury are to the north. Good luck, Jay

You might be able to find a fixer upper in Southern New Milford or a 2 bedroom condo with a basement in Danbury. You will need a car & it will be more than an hour commute to the city.

The OP did say "an hour and a half tops", so Danbury and Stratford would work. If the 1.5 hours is to get to the Bronx (rather than Manhattan), that offers a little more flexibility.
