Good idea: philly area to meriden, ct area?
My husband is interviewing for a position in Meriden, CT. We've visited CT a few times, and are comfortable with the NE in general, but have just made roots for our toddler & ourselves outside Philadelphia in a nice community, close to nice shopping, recreational/outdoors activities, cultural activities, etc.
Wondering what may be comparable to this in that area of CT? What towns (not big on cities, and I've read ALOT about Meriden so far, not all great). Looking for good schools, reasonable housing, etc. but not too far for him to commute & live on one salary.
Wondering & worried about a move! Heard alot about bad taxes, high oil & electricity...help!
Thanks!

Compared to Philly
prices are are about the same for real estate maybe a wee higher-culture, shopping is similar.
Taxes for real state nearly the same. Electricity will be higher.
Hope this helps

Hi Hatgal,
How far outside of Philadelphia are you? Please describe your current town(ship), what you like, and what you don't like about it. Once we have this information, we can give you comparable towns here.

Thanks! Any info. would be helpful.
We live in Hatfield Twp., close to Montgomery Twp. (which is better known) both in Montgomery County.
We love outdoor activities, space to roam & play, access to something like Target & groceries, farming communities (farmers markets, etc.). Basically, suburb-y with a touch of country.
Thanks!

Based on the above, you could consider Middlefield which has Lyman's Orchard. Target would be in the adjacent town/city (Meriden). If Middlefield is too small, then you could also consider Berlin, Southington, or Wallingford which are also all adjacent to Meriden. Berlin and Southington have Roger's Orchard. These are small, but well-known farm stands specializing in pies and produce.

Try looking here-Cheshire
I grew up in Cheshire (right near Meriden) really nice. I have lived in New Hope and Yardley PA for the past 10 years. Wonderful school distric, my Mom still teaches school in the system. zip code is 06410. Try www.realtor.com and put in the zip. Have fun! I miss being there!

Meriden doesn't sound right for you to me! try Cheshire, Wallingford, Durham or North Haven.

Meriden's not bad. It's pretty much the only racially diversified area of those other towns mentioned. So far I believe only one homicide rate this year. Taxes are a little higher, about 3x normal the amount of homes for sale, and taxes a little higher than other towns. Schools are so so. I worked in one for a few years. A nice home under 300k but taxes may run about 4-5k a year.

If Middlefield is too pricey for you, try neighboring Haddam. Great small town on the CT River with access to shopping in Middletown and Meriden. Jay

I'd stay away from meriden at all costs. I wish I knew this before I moved there...let's say I've moved out of that city less than two years later and minus one 42 inch HD t.v.
Don't leave Philly for Central CT.
You will regret it.
