dog hacking, gagging, and licking
My boyfriend and I rescued a dog from the pound in October, and she is a sweetheart. She is a terrier/hound mix and alittle over one year old. Since we got her shes randomly had hacking and gaggling fits. During these she is constantly licking the ground and the air and starts trying to eat everything. She also tries to vomit but usually cant or only gets a small amount of clear/white phlem. She looks very unhappy while it is happening. Also during these fits she kind of snorts, its deep and through the nose and throat. We have treated her for kennel cough because that is what we first thought it was. Of course she only does it on the weekend when we cant go to the vet. I will call them on wednesday, but I am worried about her because I dont want her to eat something and choke on it. And I feel horrible having to crate her while she is doing it, but it is the only things that helps. Please help me!

Obviously you need to move out of Connecticut. She'll be fine in Rhode Island or Massachusets, but probably not New York.

Contact a vet, for a check=up, I do hope the dog had shots etc. from the rescue, even call, and ask for what they have! The resue should have done the kennel stuff! Also, the dog needs to be trained etc., you have a big job ahead! If you really are not up to it with work, try to get her a good rehome.

we have brought her to the vet several times because of this. We got her up to date with all of her shots, got her spayed, are up to date with her heart worm. This is the only problem we are having. we have trained her well. I am a dog person, I grew up around them my whole life, my grandparents breed shiba inus and siberian huskys. Ive had multiple dogs in the past and have been around and have trained alot more. There is no need to rehome, I know the challenge. I was just hoping that someone who has been having the same problems had it diagnosed so I could ask the vet. Its not life threatening, its just a nuisance, and I want to help her. And its not all the time, its once a month about and when it happens its pretty bad. I have never experienced this before and I am going to call my vet tomorrow but if he cant see the symptoms then he cant tell me what it is, because everytime we brought her in for this she appears fine to him. Shes a healthy dog. This is the only problem.

Have you tried changing her dog food? May be allergic to one of the ingredients.

The dog may need a different dog diet of food, and to feed 2 times a day? My Bichon did this vile white
and I did panic! All it was, she, had an empty no eat for 9 hrs. She also was shy! Once that was over
I did not panic, or freak out. She also had itches, she was white, sometimes she had to wear the collar!
She got into it? Why somes dogs do, or not? I also have thought of a shiba inua, but not yet! Maybe the dog is afraid, and thinking if I mess up, I will be gone? Try a baby gate with toys, treats,
and bed, and when home do it for say 30 minutes to see how that works? My 7 yr old dog wants me to always be here! Impossible! I do relate, stress maybe? See, you, have a dog, that needs Love, Lots, and, maybe is so afraid, if I mess up, I am gone? Some would do this, why, I admire you! Try to focus, on the good, and praise, and, hard as it is, ignore the rest! Gold star you do get! Go see marley and me! What a dog! Also, that really would make your dog golden, and give you a laugh! There also must have been a reason the dog was in rescue? Anyway, go day by day, and it should work out!
Lassie, was many dogs! boiled hamburg, and boiled rice, then mix the 2 is good, also baby food, and warm it up may work. just give tiny portions!

My first thought was worms. Have you had her dewormed? Sometimes they will coem up the throat somewhat "choking" the dog. Does your dog always seem hungry? Worms tend to eat all the food in there stomachs so they are always eating since they aren't getting any food only the worms.
Anyhow, I would bring your dog to the vet. Also have your dog heartworm tested as those can cause coughing sometimes as well. But let's hope it's not that.

My 14 year old Border Collie has been doing that for three years now. He coughs and gags, and clears his throat loudly a few times a day. It's kind of nasty sounding, and keeps me awake at night, it's extremely loud and drawn out. The vets aren't sure what it is, either. He did do it once in front of them, as we walked in the door and the vet happened to be standing in the waiting room, so I was lucky. I suspect it could be a throat tumor as Cruikshl suggested, but at his age we aren't going to follow up on it. He's otherwise healthy. If I were you, I would try another vet, and get a second opinion.
