Hello! I have applied to SCSU and am hopeful to relocate to this area (from Ohio) this summer to attend grad school. I have spent countless hours on craigslist trying to find a 1 bedroom apt in a decent area but not overly priced. Can someone help me with what streets/areas are safe for single women? I enjoy small local artsy areas, as I live in here in Ohio. I have a car and am willing to commute, as much as traffic allows to school if there is some place within New Haven & the city if possible?!?!?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated!!!!!

thank you in advance!!

I lived in NH as a single woman and foudn there were quite a few good areas. Westville is closest to SCSU and has more of a residential feel than other parts of the city. State Street is more funky/artsy which may be what you are looking for. Rental rates are more expensive downtown since the Yale students tend to jack uo the rates around there. For ease of commute I would stick around Westville, from the Woodbridge line down to the intersection of Whalley Ave and Rt. 10 (Boulevard). Just stay away from Valley Street area, it can be a little rough there, as can Goeffe Street as you stray away from SCSU. Also, don't overlook Hamden. There are many rentals there and many SCSU students live there too. Just stay away from lower Dixwell Ave in hamden or New Haven, there tends to be some trouble there.

Hey there, I'm a single woman who has lived in New Haven for almost 5 years (I did grad school here and stuck around for an extra year). For the past three, I've lived on State Street, which I love, and for the first two, I lived on Mansfield St (a little dodgy at times). What kind of rent were you looking to pay (not including utilities)? That might help in terms of advising you.
