This shouldn't have been posted in the general U.S. room since it is state-specific. Moving to the CT room where it's fate may lay.

ginrock77 is on a distinguished road
I have traveled across the country and have never experienced "disgust" from others when I told them where I live. Isn't the real issue that people from the south were aggressive to you because of your license plate? That behavior is much more of an issue than "what's wrong with Connecticut." It speaks more of that region than ours. Also consider that maybe they were not reacting to your license plate, but maybe you were driving slow in the left lane.

I wish I had something clever to say. I really find it hard to believe that someone else would really care so much about where you're from that it would bother them. As far as the comments from other people, I think that's just human nature. People seem to do that no matter where you are and where you tell them you're going to. Maybe if they're close to you it's a way of expressing their fear of you leaving them.

Anyway, hope you like CT.

I never experienced anyone outside of New England treating me differently because I was from Connecticut. People in Vermont and New Hampshire are a different story. Since many Connecticut residents own second homes in these states sometimes these Connecticut resident's behavior toward the locals rub people the wrong way.

I used to live in Greenwich. I attended Greenwich High School for 2 years and although it was very expensive, CT has some of the best towns anywhere in the USA. I would say probably jealousy due to their inferiority complex. I moved to TX after my sophomore year and a lot of my teachers thought I was OUT of my mind, many people in CT have a superiority complex though, especially in places like Greenwich, Westport etc.

Default What's wrong with connecticut?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Connecticut but I do think that people outside of our state have the misconception that it is a very "rich, snobby state" which is not true. Sure it is expensive to live along the coast and further South than where I am in Meriden, but you are correct, the coast is gorgeous and it is perfectly located being close to both Boston and NYC. Like all states, we do have our areas or pockets of "adverse elements" but you can find that most anywhere. Everyone touts NYC but the crime rate there is high as well...no place is perfect. There are also really nice towns inland...Southington, Cheshire, Hamden, Berlin, Kensington and more. The only place I found better to live other than Connecticut was Maine and that was because the people are so nice and the area is so beautiful...not a huge population where I lived so there were not too many folks to spoil it for the rest of us.

One problem ...

Everytime we tell folks that we are from the state, or when we planned our move, everyone acts disgusted at the thought of Connecticut. We drove to GA for a family reunion and folks rode very close to our bumper, gave dirty looks and in Decatur we were given the bird for no reason!!

Why all of this hatred towards CT?
I go back to Georgia every two months and have never experienced that.

Probably Jealous. It's like having a great hockey team and all the other teams despise them.

They would rather see us say EY OH, act dumb, and have crime rate at record levels. Oh yeah, thats NY. LOL

When I told people in South Florida that I was moving to CT, besides the obvious comment "wow! it's cold there!", I had other comments like "it's a piece of paradise", "it's so beautiful there", "it's comatose" (of course, compared to South FL, but peace and tranquillity are a very subjective value....) No one commented negatively about it, actually New England was referred to as a very desirable place to live (apart the weather, that is.) Of course, no one there had anything against CT being liberal, as Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) is more liberal than CT.

I think one's political views play a big role in the Americans' perception of other Americans. Fort Lauderdale has much to envy CT for, but it has many other aspects that are as or more desirable. Some other areas of the States are not quite so fortunate, therefore, political views become a heavier factor in judging the rest of the country.

First off, IMO this is what I would call form of a straw man argument. You make a blanket claim such as "why are all rednecks stupid" so folks then spend the time showing how it's obviously not true.

There is "nothing wrong with CT". Well, actually yes there is a lot wrong with CT but not in the context of your post. More internal things.

Living in FL and NC and having CT plates for extended times in both I personally have never experienced what you claim.

In fact, it's been mostly the opposite. Most folks think we live in gold palaces here.

With the current political climate, IF such things were to occur I can certainly understand it.

Going past "blue" and "red" and contrary to what kidyankee seems to think we are a very very progressive state. We have the stereotypical progressive model that is making an effort to change our country at a core level.

By progressive I don't mean white guys with dreadlocks and whole food stores. On the contrary, I mean people with lots of power (I.E. Blumenthal) using said power outside of the realm of their scope. The same can be said for the courts usurping the will of the people and our democratic system and forcing legislation when that was never their place to do so.

Think about it. This small state of 3 million people has most of it's major cities as "sanctuary cities" welcoming illegal immigrants, we have redefined marriage, are second only to California regarding environmental oversight, and we are home to some of the worlds most powerful companies with HUGE lobbies in Washington. (I.E. GE has a large stake in the government forced "green" legislation. Don't think they are not influencing policy.) We also have some of the greatest disparity between "rich" and "poor", one of the nations highest spending rates comparing the ratio of our budget size to population size and one of the nations highest tax burdens.

Whether you like it or don't is not the point. It's who we are, and that frankly rubs a lot of people in this nation the wrong way. I think those problems are what many people in the nation are NOT okay with and think has been taken over the top.

Did I mention how MANY corrupt politicians we have churned out in this small state as well? (Dodd is a major one.)

One thing I DO find somewhat curious and funny is that we are also home to some of the most outspoken critics of said movements such as Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Glenn Beck etc. Go figure.
