BigHouse9, the schools here in CT most defenitely do 'teach to the test' because there is a statewide test called the 'CMT's' that the kids take starting in 3rd grade. They most defenitely teach to it and the teachers will tell you so-my kids' teachers said it plainly.

Many states probably have a similar test-not sure about NC or Wake county, but they probably do, just like CT does.

Glastonbury is gorgeous but if you commute over the river it can be a nightmare at times.

As for your tax rate and value - it's sounds like you are near FFC or in FFC. FFC and close by do NOT represent the whole state. Please keep that in mind. My much larger home, on probably 8 times the property has a town valuation less than yours and I'm literally 15 minutes from my "rural" door to the streets of Hartford.

I am from NC. I have lived in Ohio, VA, Texas and now CT. First you have to remember that NC is LARGE!!!!! You can't compare the entire state of NC to the entire state of CT. I was born and raised in NC and there are parts that I have never been to in my life. Charlotte is GREAT! We have every professional team and NASCAR so there is always something to do. You can drive to the beach in about 3 hours or to the mountains in about 3 hours. Depending on the school system it can be great or horrible. NC has Duke, Chapel Hill, NC State, Davidson and Wake Forest to name a few so our kids can go to great colleges and stay in state. The Raleigh/Durham area is GREAT! I lived in Winston-Salem as well. There are a lot of as you put it "rednecks" in the south but I think the group that you classify as rednecks are very nice and sincere people. You never have to wonder what is on their minds.

CT to me is a very depressed type of place, but I can only speak about the areas that I see daily (the New London) area. I am sure that the Hartford and New Haven areas are nice.

I have never really been to the coastal areas of NC. Sorry, I can't help you on that. But GO TO CHARLOTTE!! IT IS GREAT!

Think long and hard... it's easy to look back with rose colored glasses. You have limited years left with your kids at home... you know you will probably sacrifice that time if you come back to CT. The pressure to conform is very real in CT, esp as your kids get to teenage years. Maybe the place you chose to live in NC is not the greatest fit for you? maybe another town would be better? Having relocated several times myself, it definitely takes about 1.5-2years to get settled in a place and start to make real friends. It also won't happen if you still have one foot in CT.. you will always feel like an outsider if you don't throw yourself into a place fully. So.. I'd say either decide to commit another say 5 years and give it 100% in NC, or pack up now and go back to CT.

We're moving back to New England from NC.

I've lived in different areas on the eastern US, and from what I've seen there's no place like New England. Not saying there aren't plenty of beautiful areas to live throughout the country...

I'm just saying New England is completely unique. The history. The weather (yes, the wonderful snow). The coast. The small towns. The environmental protection (the developers run the show down here in NC with little regard for the land.) The Red Sox (sorry CT Yankee fans). The people (some call us rude...I say just "real.")

Can't wait to get back for some lobster, chowder, good pizza... and all the other things we took for granted before we left.

CT SUCKS!!! I moved here with my wife and daughter so my wife could be near her family. We were running from the hurricane's from Florida which got old very quickly.

I do not understand the taxes that are required to live in CT. What do you get for the money... I am paying $3000 to drive my car in taxes each year!!!YES EACH YEAR!!!

I hope to be headed out of here soon. Schools might be a little better than in the south, but with the money I will be saving I will buy a top rated private education for my daughter.

You people can have CT... I will be leaving soon... I'll leave a light on for you!

Yep it's horrible, worst place in the world to live...that's why a lot of us moved back from utopia.

If you are paying $3000 in car taxes you must drive a Ferrari F430 or a Bentley. I pay $500 a year on a brand new $32K truck. Not my favorite thing to do but not the end of the world either.

Thanks for "giving" us CT back. Enjoy your next move "again"...hopefully the next place won't suck too like FL and CT does.

I thought $3k was a little excessive for taxes on cars too. I had 2 newer vehicles in Glastonbury and did not come anywhere near even a third of that. Oh well, some people will find the worst in anything.
