Move to Waterbury and put your kids in Private school.
I know it's a little late now as you already said you were putting in an offer, but what came to my mind for other towns was - in no particular order: Thomaston/Northfield (RT254/109 area is simply beautiful.) about 30 miles to Shelton straight down RT 8, Watertown (If you can handle all the Waterbury escapees. ) Oxford, Beacon Falls, Prospect.
With two working parents, IMHO I think it's easier if one has a longer commute and one is closer to home in case something happens (Illness, injury etc) IMO being North of Waterbury and closer to Torrington will allow your wife easier access to home/kids (Daycare I assume) if there is a need.
I made the RT68 drive from RT8 Naugatuck to Wallingford through Cheshire for about 6 months when I moved back to CT. It wasn't bad, about a 20 minute trip...from Cheshire center it would be 10-15 minutes. RT42 is another story. As Rich noted, lots of curves, elevation changes etc that makes a slower go.
Since the new bridge has been put in on 15, does traffic still ball up near Sikorsky anymore? It used to be pretty bad...something else to consider.
Well, good luck Kid. Cheshire is a nice town.

I'm gonna say I don't agree here. If kidyankee grew up in Fairfield and lived in danbury, then Thomaston would be like danbury without the mall, the immigrants, the semi-fast past downtown, and move all the people from fairfield to thomaston (no diversity) and give them all lower paying jobs (most appear to be working-class, some appear to maybe even be poor).
When I was working for CVS (I floated for CVS during the summer before my freshman year in college) on route 6 up there, we had a man walk in and ask what he could give his dog because he said he had a cold. When the pharmacist started listing treatments, a man behind him said to give turpentine. The pharmacist said opposed the idea, saying that he saw "no therapeutic benefit for a dog with a cold to sit in paint thinner." The man behind him said "come on man, I do it all the time". They both walked out together and we never heard from them or the dog again.
lol, only in thomaston.

I'm actually NOT in favor of moving the mixmaster but the Rep-Am did an article one Sunday about how South End residents were in favor because right now, the highway is built on a bank and all day all you hear is trucks. But u gotta recognize that the current mixmaster wont last forever. I think its ridiculous to move such a hugh highway. Waterbury has woods to the north, and I always wonder why they cant just extend 691 to the north and make a bypass.

Thank you for appreciating my humor. Honestly though, the highway will not be moved. They will probably repair it and maybe do some modest upgrades but a full moving is not in the cards.
The current Commissioner is VERY transit oriented and I doubt you will see many new highways built in the next several years. Governor Rell is not a decisive Governor and the current wind is toward transit improvements so that is the way she is going. Interestingly, Connecticut already spends more per capita on transit than any other state. And everyone says we are so highway oriented here. Guess they are wrong. Jay

Isn't Cheshire where that horrible murder happened a few years ago- a mother and her two daughters were killed and husband survived?
I loved Cheshire- sweet little town with great trail for walking/roller blading and then this crime was committed....it has lost its innocence in my mind .

All towns have crimes, unfortunately no one can live in a bubble. It is everywhere.
