"Things get swept under the rug," Auslander said before telling me about her grandson and "children in high school driving expensive cars, children in designer clothes, children who live in million-dollar homes, children with time on their hands and money to spend."
The obituary said her grandson Jeremiah died "unexpectedly." Auslander and her husband, Jerry, wanted me to know that unexpected doesn't mean uncommon.
"Maybe this will open up some eyes," said Jerry Auslander, who told me he had heard of other recent overdoses in town.
I couldn't confirm this with police, although they had plenty to say about heroin and drug-related burglaries in town. During the last few weeks, four young people — three of them teenagers — have been charged with heroin possession. Police also made three heroin arrests in September, two of them teenagers.
I was skeptical, though. Aren't we talking about the kids destined to get into trouble, anyway?
"It's a different Glastonbury," explained Sgt. Timothy Veins of the police department's youth unit. "We've had some serious incidents in town. They obviously need to be addressed."
The increasing presence of heroin among suburban teenagers is tied to growing abuse of expensive opiates, like Percocet, which are often found in the family medicine cabinet. Heroin, also an opiate, is a cheaper alternative that is also relatively easy to obtain. The price is as little as $5 or $10 a bag, compared to expensive prescription pills, which can cost $60 apiece on the street. Significantly, heroin is now snorted like cocaine.
Corey Davis, a Glastonbury officer and an investigator with a regional drug task force, told me about a recent surveillance operation he was part of in Hartford, where police observed a parade of cars with license plates from suburban towns lining up to buy heroin from a dealer.

Thank you! I saw this article. I did not think its language was at all as strong as what you reported on your message.

There's going to be drugs anywhere. I know of no community that is exempt, and my job enables me to be pretty knowledgeable about a wide variety of towns. As it always did, it is going to come down to how you raise your kids to handle the adversity that they will face. Glastonbury is a nice town and I absolutely would not let a news story like that scare you away.
Plus, there is a Plan B restaurant in town!! What else do you need to know??

7 people were reported as being caught for possesion during that time period. Many more didn't get caught.
And why would you be surprised at suburban kids commiting crimes in Hartford?? It happens all the time. In fact the article states that suburban residents were LINED UP to commit the crime of purchasing drugs in Hartford.

GLASTONBURY — - A second man who police say left a friend to die of a heroin overdose in September has been apprehended in Virginia, police said Wednesday.
Jason Robert Miller, 19, was pulled over for a motor vehicle violation over the weekend and has been detained there, Sgt. Joel White said Wednesday. It is not known when he will be extradited to Connecticut.
Miller, of East Hartford, left the state before police could serve the warrant for his arrest on manslaughter and other charges in connection with the Sept. 17 death of Jeremiah Portman of Glastonbury. Portman died after buying heroin in Hartford with Miller and another friend, Erik Loura, police said.

Also note that Auslander is a grandmother of a dead grandson making the claims. The police are not and in fact the reporter (Green) even said he could not confirm it with police.
But I'll ask you this...how many Heroin arrests are made in the inner city compared to the suburban towns? Moreover, what makes you think it's the suburban kids who are corrupting the inner city kids? That's simply crazy.

Wait wait wait...how do YOU know "many more didn't get caught"?
Answer me this. Why were they in Hartford to buy the drugs and didn't just get it in Glastonbury? Exactly!
Edit: Lets get a little more real here:
FBI Crime Stats:
Crime Rates 1-10 Higher Being Worse
New Canaan: Violent Crime 1 Property Crime 1
Bridgeport: Violent Crime 8 Property Crime 6
United States: Violent Crime 3 Property Crime 3
Glastonbury: Violent Crime 1 Property Crime 3
Hartford: Violent Crime 8 Property Crime 8
United States: Violent Crime 3 Property Crime 3
Go ahead and try to explain it away.
