Fairfield County Weekly: News - A Lot of Leniency
This kind of crap happens all over the country wherever there's affluent kids; its nothing new.

That said, sometimes affluent kids can do REALLY dumb crap... two examples, one from my own life and another from a friend that's a FBI agent...

1) When I was in high school in the late 70s, 18 was the drinking age. When I graduated in '80, they had a beer blowout on a private farm property that was owned by one of the girls in my class' parents. One of best friends' GF was at that party, where two guys that were typical troublemakers (but never got caught, of course), came up with the bright idea to hotwire a tractor and go joy-riding in the dark.

Julie rode between them, and the idiots promptly drove the tractor into a ditch (it had no lights). In typical idiot fashion, the guys were thrown clear, the tractor landed on her head, she was DOA (the kids there saw the blood coming out of her ears) at the hospital after the helicopter flight. 18 years old, and life over.

Very popular cheerleader, nice girl and smart. Gone. Its probably saved lives that the drinking age has been raised to 21 and its a little harder to get beer. Today, I would imagine the boys would have been charged with manslaughter and done some time, but the parents' of the dead girl would have likely sued the other girls' family that owned the place.

But those kind of parties went on ALL the time when I was in high school, like out of Risky Business. Parents would leave for the weekend, house immediately turned into party central, and there were a lot of wealthy people who sent their kids to my high school, which was public.

2) More recently, its been a usual practice of affluent Fairfax county high school students to drive down to the 'hoods in SE in DC and buy pot and other drugs from the dealers on the streets. My bud works with the DC Violent Crime task force (or did for a while) and the guy who ran the unit would arrest the teens, take them down to the DC lockup, and then call their parents... but not before screaming at them and pointing out "WTF are you doing? These guys will shoot you and take your parents SUV."

They impounded the cars, BTW. A lot of po-ed Fairfax county folks, I would imagine.

The point is, this behavior doesn't change... consequences might, but they're unevenly applied.

One would assume that a prospective "stand-out" student would exercise better judgment than to brazenly disregard the law.

Once again I don't know why so many of you harbor such animosity for he/she/it, but politricks makes a valid point about a serious double-standard. I'm only 22, and I never would have DREAMED of consuming alcohol until I was 21.
Dubya was a hell raiser and still got into Ivy League schools.

Family connections and money can do wonders for black sheep. They can even get you elected President.
