Westeville and East rock are nice great areas but you still need your street smarts in New Haven, there is plenty of crime in some neighborhoods.

For your situation you might be better looking in Milford or Fairfield, since the commute to manhattan gets hard once you are past bridgeport!

I am not sure how much you are willing to spend or how long of a commute your significant other is willing to have, but if you live in downtown New Haven, you will have easy access to Yale, buses to SCSU and the trains into New York. The train ride into Manhattan though is about an hour and 40 minutes. People do it, but I do not know how. From Milford the train ride is a bit shorter (an hour and 30 minutes) while from Fairfield it is about an hour and 10 minutes. Good luck, Jay

Taking the bus to Southern will be much easier if you live downtown--to commute by bus to Southern from East Rock, you would have to take a bus to the green and then switch lines for another bus ride up to Southern. My husband rides his bike to Southern from our apartment in East Rock, which takes about 30 minutes, but this may not be possible in the winter. Which Yale library will you be at? That might affect your decision as well.
