Hi,
I'm new to the board. My job has me moving to East Hartford area from NY. I'm willing to travel up to 30-40 minutes. Where are the best schools in this region? I saw Glastonbury and Cheshire keep coming up when reading some previous posts. Are there any additional towns that I should be reasearching into? We have a one year old and need to take the school systems into account before we purchase. Also, we are willing to spend up to $400k on housing.
Thanks!

Cheshire would be on the far side commute-wise. Glastonbury actually neighbors East Hartford. Since prices and quality schools go hand-in-hand, what are you looking for in a property/house and for what price?

I'll agree Cheshire is too far of a commute.
Glastonbury would be perfect for you since it's real close to east hartford, perhaps also consider nearby Bolton which has a smaller more rural town feel then Glastonbury but it has good schools as well and it's a smaller community.

To be honest with you, I'm not positive what we are looking for in a house. My husband and I have been renting for many years and are looking the perfect home (as obscure as that sounds). We want at least 3 bedrooms and a nice size backyard. Not looking for a fixer upper. Need something that is updated and move in ready.

Avon, Farmington or Simsbury would be my choices. You can find something very nice in that price range, and there are new construction homes available if that is your preference.
I agree that Cheshire is much too far to commute.

Avon, Farmington and Simsbury would be too far in my opinion.
Farmington is the ONLY one of those towns with direct highway access so it would take a lot of side roads just to get to 84 and then through hartford to the eastern side of the state.

West Hartford would be my choice for consideration. It is a very nice town for families with children and great schools. It isn't far from East Hartford either.

When we lived in Farmington, my husband commuted to East Hartford for 5 years. It took about 25-30 minutes so it meets the criteria of the OP. However, the traffic is frequently terrible in Farmington and the amenities of the town are lacking. There are much better towns to live in for the money spent, IMO.

I would not recommend living west of Hartford if your husband is working in East Hartford. And I certainly would not recommend Farmington, simsbury or Avon. The commute would be very difficult through Hartford and for no reason. There are many great towns to live in that are an easier commute.

I first would consider Glastonbury. It is an excellent town located immediately south of East Hartford. It has great schools and a nice downtown area with some great shops and restaurants. glastonbury is thought to be an upscale town with pricey homes but there is a wide range of housing options available. Many people that work in east Hartford live in Glastonbury. Also there are a lot of nice neighborhoods in your price range here.

Likw others suggested, also consider South Windsor or Bolton. Bolton is a small rural town with very good schools (the high school there has less than 300 students) but it does not really have any stores or businesses. For shopping you would have to travel to nearby Manchester. South Windsor is a bit more suburban in character with nice homes and is near the Buckland Hills shopping district which has just about every store you would need. This is a great convenience but note that there can be a lot of traffic in that area. Good luck and let us know if you have any questions. Jay
