I think it has alot going for it, and I'm kind of excited to see what it will offer in the years to come.
All in all, I think Eastern Connecticut largely is just being noticed. It's sweeping beauty, and low-key lifestyle I think is going to propel it into Connecticut's limelight in the years to come. While parts of Western Connecticut are probably going to head into decline, Eastern Connecticut will fare a bit better. We'll see!

What parts of Western CT are going to head into decline? Bridgeport's already there and has been there for decades...what other areas are you referring to specifically?

maggie88,
If you can afford it, Madison seems the more attractive route. I haven't been in a while, but as I recall, it had nice little shops, beach life, not too far from New Haven if you are interested in museums, theatre. Jacques Pepin used to live there, not sure if he still does (if you are a foodie).
I'm from the NL/Norwich area, which has changed with the arrival of Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casinos. Now that area has become a destination for some, though I seriously doubt it will ever become Vegas. I cracked up when I saw the first ads with people gambling in glamourous, lightweight evening wear . Yeah, in the middle of winter, they'll be wearing their turtle necks and flannel shirts, just as they've always done. This is New England.
Grotonman, I love your ideas and optimism. Please keep it going!

Of all of these areas of SE CT, Groton, Norwich, Madison.... etc. What would you suggest for a couple of empty-nesters, 22 year old-daughter off on her own now, we both previously lived in NYC in our 20's, we live in Twin Cities now which is it's own midwest mecca of culture but we're both from the northeast and want to be near our families, both self-employed, I'm now out of corporate and train dogs full time..... we love art, restaurants, beach. We definitely do not care for pretention but love beauty so have to have that.
Any suggestions from the experts here

Hi Maggie - Welcome to Connecticut. I would recommend considering the shoreline towns east of New Haven. Branford, Guilford, Madison, Clinton, Westbrook and Old Saybrook are all great towns with a lot to offer including train service and easy access to New Haven and into New York City. Branford, Guilford and Madison are a bit more suburban in character as they are suburbs of New Haven. Clinton, Westbrook and Old Saybrook are a bit more beachy in character and generally a bit quieter. I know a number of retirees that have moved to Old Saybrook to enjoy the beach life there. I hope this helps. Jay

Yes, thanks for all of the input here. Not that we're even near the retiree age yet -- ha! Many years to go but we're both self-employed and would like a more beachy life and be near our families. CT seems a great choice and I loved growing up in Westport. But the cost and community are no longer my style
Thanks again and I'll be doing more research on the beach communities.

I think I saw that East Lyme was voted one of the top 100 places to live...in fact CT has 6 in the top 100.

Maggie - I saw on another post that you liked it when you lived in Westport. If you want something similar, you might want to consider Guildford. It has sort of a similar vibe of Westport from years gone by (artsy and affluent). Plus it has a lot of charm and it is accessable to New Haven and New York. Jay
PS - For pictures of Westport today (like you asked for on another post) check out the Westport Now website. It has a lot of news and information on Westport and has some really great picutres around town. Jay

Like to argue, don't you? It was a simple statement of opinion, and I'd like to keep it as such. Thanks!

He simply asked you to expand upon your opinion. How is that argumentative?

It's a matter of necessity, really. Is it necessary to demand such questions? I'm not on this forum to demand explanations on the opinions of others. Perhaps you should take a lesson, and stay out of it. If you'd like to argue, apply to law school
