There are people in New Milford that commute to Stamford, Norwalk, White Plains and even New York City.

Yikes - that's quite the commute. I can see Norwalk but Stamford, White Plains and Manhattan are pretty far. Norwalk is also a pain because of Route 7 south of Danbury. I did that commute for quite a while and would never do it again.

Thank you all for the quick replies. I have looked at New Milford some at it seems nice and maybe we should revisit it. I was worried about commuting to lower FC from there. We'll take a second look. There is also a lot in Newtown for sale so maybe I can find that "deal" that might be out there. I have a colleague who lives in Southbury and drives to Main Street in Ridgefield each day and it takes about 45 min (give or take for traffic).

I know 2 people that make the commute from New Milford to Stamford. They both go through NY state rather than go 7. Lousy commute.

To Stamford or White Plains it would be easier to go 684 - probably take an hour or so. To Norwalk however, you're stuck (literally).

One thing about Monroe that might appeal to you is that most homes are on one acre or more of property.

"wow"In South NJ, we had a 400K home that was on .5 acres, level lot, 3400 Sq ft, 4 br, 2.5 bath, built in 2003. Taxes were higher than here but we definitely had much more home for the money.
Here's my scenario:
I'm looking up to 450K but would prefer to be at 400Kish if possible. I have family in Ridgefield so I would like to stay close to there if at all possible. I want CT, not NY. I am a finance professional who currently works at home but I could see a possibility of job opportunities in Stamford, Danbury, or Greenwich in the future so commute is being considered. I want a single family, prefer 4 BR but could survive with 3 if it was the right house. I would like about an acre give or take with a some privacy in the backyard (pool would be nice but not necessary). I have a 5 year old and 1 year old... schools seem to be good every where but I want to stay out of Danbury. I've looked at Ridgefield... I love the town and the sense of community, but it is way out of my price range. I've seen 500K tear downs. We also looked at Redding and haven't seen much I'd consider. Today was spent in Bethel... we saw 2 that would do... but they were both closer to 500K and weren't perfect by any means. Newtown seems to offer a lot also and we haven't finished searching there (a lot to look at there). Fairfield had nothing. Southbury seems to have a lot of what I've described but is about 50 min to an hour away. Internet searches on Trumball haven't produced much. Where am I not looking that I should be?

You need to work with a real estate agent. Fairfield County is amazingly epensive. My Mother In Law lives in Fairfield and has a simple ranch house with three bedrooms, a tiny living room, two bathrooms, an outdated bedroom is included in those three bedrooms..still has orange shag rug. She has a big kitchen with a dining area attached and off of that a den type thing. A deck on back of the house and a porch on front and her home has been valued at 700K. On the other hand, we live in Meriden on the Southington border and our home has 4 bedrooms which includes a master bedroom with a suite, formal dining room, kitchen, formal living room with a marble fireplace, two bathrooms (there were 3 we took one out), finished basement witha fireplace, laundry room and all cedar closets in basement for storage. Outside, we have half an acre that includes a 20X40 in ground pool with two out buildings all the grounds are professionally landscaped and our home has been valued at $300,000. You are paying for location in the Fairfield County area.
My sister-in-law lives in Monroe and my husband has more family in the Monroe area...still pretty pricey. So, unless you are willing to move more North of Fairfield County, it is going to hurt your pocketbook big time.
Again, contact a real estate agent and give them your price range. I am sure they can help you.

Fairfield County is expensive. I live in Northern Fairfield County which is less expensive then lower FFC, yet still extremely expensive considering State and national averages, you do get what you pay for. You are close to higher paying jobs, outstanding schools, shopping is never that far away at all. Big cities such as New York that offer great culture, good restaurants, etc.
Check out Monroe, Trumbull and Newtown. I think you will be impressed.
