I was liking Cheshire because of some multi-acreage new homes before I read about the tainted water. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.

Nice. Meets most requirements, house-wise, except for central air.

I saw that- I have central air in my townhouse and strongly prefer it.

Schools may have a good rep but don't think for one minute there isn't a drug problem in CHS.

Cheshire is great!
Some people think that Cheshire is a bad town with a bad reputation but it is quite the opposite. Cheshire is a very safe community. You may have heard about the tradgedy in July of 2007 but that was a random, freak accident and I feel totally safe from danger even though I live right down the street from the Petit house. I am greatly sorrowed by this event but, strange as it may seem, the community has grown closer because of it. Our town has come together (ie. Lights of Hope) in a way poeple who don't live in Cheshire don't understand. The town was literally breathtaking the night Lights of Hope took place.
Moving on to public school system, Cheshire has WONDERFUL schools. Anyone who says that Cheshire has rough schools has no idea what they are talking about because Norton Elemntary School, Dodd Middle School, and Cheshire High School are great schools. These are just the schools people in my family currently attend!! And while the houses are pretty pricey (especially in the Abrams Rd. area and Mountain Rd. area) they are high quality and all have spectacular neighborhoods and nice families. Some people commented on the snootiness of people and it is true, some families think they are awesome and rich and can do whatever they want. but Cheshire is great and anybody who says the community is torn apart or in pieces is deffinitly wrong. ANYONE WHO DOESN'T LIVE OR HASN'T LIVED IN CHESHIRE SHOULDN'T COMMENT ON WHAT THEY THINK CHESHIRE IS LIKE!!!! LEAVE IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've lived in Cheshire since November 1991 (two different houses). I don't have children so I can't comment on the schools. Besides that, I'm a REALTOR® and am not allowed to give an opinion on the matter.
You mentioned house prices, so here goes...
1) Currently, there are 167 single-family properties on the market which is about a one-year supply. The median list price is $459,900, and the average list price is $516,291.
2) Sales from 01/01/08 - 09/30/08 are down 41 percent compared to the same period last year. NOTE: sales are down 8 percent for Southington and 25 percent for Wallingford.
Here are specific figures:
01/01/08 - 09/30/08
CHES 135 sold; $380,808 avg sale price
SOUT 276 sold; $302,282 avg sale price
WLFD 204 sold; $299,658 avg sale price
01/01/07 - 09/30/07
CHES 228 sold; $407,038 avg sale price
SOUT 301 sold; $312,265 avg sale price
WLFD 272 sold; $319,328 avg sale price

I live in Prospect the town the border Cheshire and I would recommend Cheshire in a heart beat. I pretty much do everything there. The schools are fantastic and you have a lot of options.
As far as the contamination, are you talking about the gas station leak? It's in a very specific part of cheshire, the area close to Prospect. So you can find a lot of places with safe water.
The crime is really low, maybe a little more than Prspect but both towns are very safe with great police departments.
As far as housing, while it can be a little on the high side, if you look you can find some deals. There are some options for under 350k. And if you are willing to consider a condo you have a lot more options.
