Arrow Oxford or Thomaston

Which town is better for a family of five moving from Auckland, NZ? We would like a good school district. Thomaston seems very nice but which is nicer overall? We have not been to either town.

Of all the schools systems in CT, Thomaston would not be one I would choose.
Just for your info also that Thomaston has no direct access aside from route 8, which can make it hard to commute certain places and thomaston is very rural in nature as well so getting to a mall would be a trip, though Bristol has some big box stores.

Sorry not familiar with oxford.

Oxford is a great town - I think you would love it. It's close to the Cities in Fairfield County as well as New Haven and Waterbury, but it's just far enough away to have a more rural/suburban feel. It's also about and hour and a half drive from NYC. The schools are great and there is a brand new High School. Feel free to PM me for more info!

These two towns are very different.

Thomaston, IMO, resembles a rural Derby before the influx of Fairfield County commuters. It is small, quiet, and doesn't have the best schools. The school system is so tiny that I actually think it works against the ranking - kids are very sheltered up there. I know two kids who graduated from Thomaston High and what they told me was a little odd.

Oxford is much nicer, IMO. It is more upscale and more of a bedroom community than Thomaston. It is also much closer to Trumbull, which from your previous posts says you will be working.

If your budget is still $500k, I say go with Oxford. You will get less home for your money, but it's closer, nicer and has better schools.

I think I have given you these before but here are links to information on schools systems in Connecticut.

Strategic School Profiles by District

Strategic School Profiles by School

Generally, Oxford schools perform better on state standardized tests. They appear to perform above state averages while Thomaston generaly performs at or just below. Jay
