For JViello
I remember you saying in a post that you were considering at one point moving your family to North Carolina.
I've recently moved to Raleigh area from the Farmington Valley in CT and can tell you I miss CT terribly already, especially after waking up to find Imported Red Fire Ants on the carpeting next to our bed. I was truly willing to embrace this place but this experience has changed me. I guess that if I don't feel physically safe in the one place in the world where one is supposed to be safe (i.e. one's own bedroom in one's own home), than maybe it's not worth it.
I'm not sure if you and your family are still considering relocating here, but just wanted you to be aware of these ants; I don't have kids to worry about in the yard but I do have a cat and am worried enough about my pet to be a basket case already. Your family is safe there in CT.
I long for the day when I only have to worry about a tick in the yard and not have to worry about being swarmed by something that's deadly! I hope the market improves there soon for reasonable priced homes because I'll tell you I'll be looking in CT when my lease is up here!!! Weather here is pretty hot also during the day, not sure if you like hot weather. Being out and about outside isn't too pleasant unless you're out here during the morning or evening.

It's called "pest exterminator" in the yellow pages and Fire Ant Killer at Home Depot.

We did have an exterminator and quite frankly, I still don't feel safe and miss CT if you don't mind. Everyone is entitled to their own comfort level.

Wow...relocate back to CT because of ants???? Look I came from CT and now live in the Charlotte area. I love CT and I love Charlotte, but I am not going to use ants as a reason to up and move, to, from CT, Charlotte or anywhere! I believe there are other issues here besides the fire ants.

Ants were just the last straw. I don't like the slow attitude here, (reflected in the customer service) I don't like the weather, I don't like how transplants are treated, I don't like the chemical fumes from the Chinese sink in my rental home, I don't like a lot of things here.
Man, you NC people sure can take a thread personally??? Not everyone likes your area. It's nothing personal.

Itscolduphere,
I tried to private message you but I can't because your profile is private. If you would like to talk send me a message. I can very much relate to your story.

Well, this makes more sense even if I don't agree with your assessment generally. Maybe it's Raleigh, or maybe just your exact location. There are many things to like and dislike about a place...outrageous property taxes drove us out of CT, nothing more. Good luck on your move back!

Everyone is different. I personally like the Carolinas far better than Ct. My wife prefers Ct.
I have gotten bitten by fireants. I also got Lyme Disease in Ct. I'll take fire ants any day.
