Southbury or Middlebury anyone??
Hi--
Could anyone tell me about Middlebury or Southbury?
Looking for a small town, with an old fashioned main street and town center, reasonable price, and good schools. Ridegfield looks beautiful, but it seems really expensive. We would like to find a home under 400K on an acre or two.
Does Bethany have a small town, main street USA feeling?
Thanks!

Have you looked in Woodbury (right near Middlebury and Southbury)? I think Woodbury has a small town, old fashioned main street appeal. All three towns are very nice, and the school systems are good. My husband grew up in that area and really liked it. You can also get significantly more for your money in those areas than in Ridgefield.

no..it is a nice town but there really isn't a *town*..it is mostly trees Southbury is nice but has some big box stores I think (K-mart? Is that still there?) and just a bit bigger (not big by any means though) Woodbury is more of a small town type town
New Milford has a nice main street and is a cute town (don't know if that is too far for you)

Depending on what you are looking for small town vs mid-size town. I would pick Middlebury over Southbury. Southbury kind of let it self grow out of proportion over the years. I lived there from 88-99.

Middlebury
The only problem with Middlebury, in my opinion, are the exhorbitant property taxes. We searched for a home there in early 2002 but could not have afforded the taxes on a retirement budget.

Oxford is a nice town and is growing rapidly. Real estate there is hot! The town is situated between Monroe Newtown Southbury and Seymour and lower Fairfield County people are discovering it's quaint atmosphere and relatively affordable housing compared to their former towns.
I know they are building a new high school (before I think they shared with Monroe) and from what I can see, it's not as pretentious as lower FFLD. Very family oriented town.
