Peccato che non abiti piu' vicino a Glastonbury... Ti potrei presentare a quei pochissimi italiani che ho incontrato qui.

In any case, you need to concentrate on meeting Americans, as those are simply statistically easier to find around. Try to look into those venues that better represent you as a whole being. If you like sports, try to join an adult club for whatever you like: tennis, volley ball, ski. If you like to read, try a book club: every town has at least a few and you can start with asking the librarians in your town. Go to a public pool during adult reserved swim times: you will see some adults sitting around waiting for the little monkeys to be pulled out of the pool and they may be available to chat as they wait for their turn to soak. Are you into nature? The Audubon Society could be a nice place: in my town they even have tasting nights, and you do not need to be an environment nut to enjoy those.

The idea is to try as many venues as you can. You do not need to continue attending them later on if you do not like them: but in the process you should be able to meet people. And, you see, it is when you start meeting people that you meet people: through their friends, the parties they may invite you, etc.

Remember, though, that the Northeast US is sooooo different from our Italian culture, even the northern Italian one, which is a little more reserved. When I approached my daughter's math teacher regarding her lack of a social life (despite the fact that she has always been a very social child), and after she strategized with me on how to help her, she also added that it takes three years in this region to start to break in. So do you best, try all the paths you can think of, but do not get demoralized. It does take time and I can prove it: I have been here almost two years and, unless the third one starts with fireworks, I may still enjoy many lonely days before I "break in". So keep your friends in Malta: you will need them when a phone call is the only way to keep your sanity.

The description you made about the difference between Italian cities and here is so true! I didn't imagine that would be like this...
I was even considering to move to Miami...but I like this area a lot indeed.

No, don't discount Miami! You may still be with no friends, but, hey, there is the sun to cheer you up! (I've lived in Fort Lauderdale for 12 years, I know what I am missing ... and what I am not.)

Just to pre-empt a repeat of last time, here's a translation: "A shame that you don't live closer to Glastonbury...I could have introduced you to the handful of Italians I've met around here."

I think I have missed something: what was the issue last time? Why do you need to translate? Good job, by the way!

Hello Miki,

I don't if you are Catholic but I am the leader of the Greenwich Forum which is a fellowship group for Catholics in their 20's, 30's and 40's where we meet up once month to listen to speakers, and also other events which we host. We also meet up socially usually about every two weeks for movies/dinner, museums, trips into NYC, baseball games and parties. If you are interested check out our website at: www.greenwichforum.org . You will see pictures of our group along with past events which we hosted. The my contact information is on the site. I have Italian ancestry having both sets of grandparents coming from Italy. So welcome!

You sound young but if you have any inclination at all for needle arts, there are many quilting/knitting, etc. guilds in CT. If into photography, join a group. They do have group photoshoots and are fun!

There was a bit of confusion on one of your Italian posts and whether it was considered an insult or not. No big deal. Jay
