Default Moving company - cost

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost approximately to move furniture from a house ~2000 square feet. How much does a moving company change to move to another town in ct maybe 50 miles away?

Thanks

in state moves are usually by the hour. So, how long it takes them to pack and unpack will affect it. Also, the driving distance. out of state moves are by the pound.

Things you can do to save costs:
1) pack as much as possible on your own
2) try to carry as much as you can to the main floor. For example, I carried many of my lighter boxes and stuff from my basement to the garage. This allowed the movers to load quicky and avoid many trips up and down the steps (also gave me a good workout)
3) Get multiple quotes. Ask for a "price not to exceed" quote.

Good luck - moving is not fun.

Be really careful on the integrity of the quote. We moved 20 miles to another town in CT and the person that originally gave the quote completely missed adding in our basement contents. We ended up paying $4000 more than originally quoted. Get a not to exceed amount in the contract.

If you have strong friends, this would be the cheapest way to move:

1) start packing all the small stuff and move them yourself
2) rent a u-haul and have your friends help carry all the big stuff in 2-3 trips max
3) remember to treat your friends out to a nice dinner or something

That sounds like a really good idea!

Re: Uhauls,
I just moved to a different town in CT, and looked into renting a UHaul for the move (40 miles)...the rental itself is going to be at least $125, and there is a $1 per mile charge for in-state moves...so if you are making 2-3 trips of 50 miles one-way, that could be an additional $300 just for mileage...not including the mileage to drop it off after you're done. The mileage charge was the deal-breaker for me...I ended up using every pick-up and SUV I could find from friends/family and it was incomparably cheaper.

So if you are thinking of going with UHaul, be aware that it is going to be much more expensive than just the "rental" rate. I've never used actual movers though, so Uhaul may be cheaper than a moving company, but if you can afford to avoid the headache of moving everything yourself, you probably should!

U-Haul is WAY cheaper than a mover. I moved this year across town and rented one, since we passed the 'put it all in a pickup' point of life, several kids ago : ) PODS is also an option-we used them once too (also in town) and it wasn't bad. Price out Penske truck rental too-and you can often hire guys by the hour off Craigslist if you need help.
