Smile planning to recolate to CT Greenwich,Stamford, Norwalk, or Westport

We are considering relocating from Europe (but I am originally from Florida) to the NY suburbs. I will be working in NYC. I am looking at areas in Connecticut, like Greenwich,Stamford, Norwalk, and Westport- they look like nice areas and the commute does not look so bad? Can anyone share their experience about the commute from Greenwich,Stamford, Norwalk,Westport and/or about the surrounding communities?

Also, can you tell me if there are any other towns in CT that are commutable to NYC?

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR YOUR ANSWERS

Many people make the commute from Connecticut into New York City each day. Depending on the town you live in, it takes a 45 to 97 minute train ride. Service is very good along the New Haven line of Metro-North Railroad. You should know that generally the closer to New York the more expensive the twon is.

Greenwich is wonderful but even a modest home there will be expensive by most people's standards. It is the closest Connecticut town to New York, has excellent schools, a beautiful downtown, wonderful neighborhoods and a lot of great amenities (parks, restaurants, recreation, etc.). It is considered one of the most desirable places to live in the country.

Stamford is also very nice, but is really a small city. It is actually pretty large by Connecticut standards with over 100,000 people. There is a wide range of housing options from large city type apartment towers to quiet country type homes on large lots. Being a small city though, Stamford does have some urban issues (crime, problem schools, etc.) you would expect but they are nearly the scale of what you find in other cities.

The next town north along the New Haven line is Darien. Similar to Greenwich but smaller, it is a great town with excellent schools and a lot of wonderful amenties.

Norwalk is a small city (about 80,000) and like Stamford has some urban issues as well. It has alot of great amenities like shopping, parks and restaurants. It has made great strides in improving its image and is much more affordable then the surrounding towns.

Westport is wonderful too but a bit pricey. It has a great downtown, excellent schools and wonderful amenities (parks, stores, restaurants, etc.). Westport is a bit more artsy than the other towns primarily because it was more of an artist colony and has a number of celebrities living there. Still it is a great place to live, but note that it is the furtherest from New York of the towns you mentioned. Jay

Check out Greenwich, CT. There are some great apartment homes for lease there, Greenwich Place Apartment Homes. They are for lease but feel like a home or condo AND they have a pool and fitness center. I really like it there.

Greenwich, Darien and Westport are rather colourless places. We too moved from Europe and chose Stamford due to a near perfect blend of urban/suburban (even wooded/near-wild and gorgeous in some parts of North Stamford) and commute to NYC. After being in the area for 3 years now, we're going to buy a place in Stamford.

In order of preference, I'd say:
- Stamford (most vibrant, most diverse, good commute to NYC)
- Greenwich (nice downtown and the shortest, easiest commute to NYC but expensive)
- Westport (close to Fairfield, which has a pretty good, though small downtown and is known to be a great community)
- Darien (picture perfect homes and streets, but extremely boring, not at all diverse, just a little freaky overall).
