Seattle, WA vs Greenwich, CT
I'm posting this thread in both CT and WA subforums. I'm trying to be responsible and do my homework prior to possibly moving cross-country.
Originally we had planned to move to Seattle but due to some personal things that have recently come up Greenwich, CT is now an option we must consider.
DH got a decent job offer in Seattle for IT (they have a good IT industry there) but got a better job offer in NY (even though Eastern US is not known for IT). We must decide between the two.
I'm an Asian SAHM and he's Caucasian so our kids are bi-racial. We are moving from California. So we know we will be adjusting to different weather in either case. We are also atheists if that matters in any way. Politically we're more conservative but neither Republican or Democrat. If labels are important we're more Libertarian if anything. In general though, we are pretty quiet about our personal views and just want a nice, safe place to raise our bi-racial kids with as little racism or prejudice as possible.
If you were us, would you pick Seattle, WA or Greenwich, CT and why? Which will provide a better quality of life for us?
And thank you so much for any advice you can give!

It's kind of impossible to compare a large city to a medium-sized(by CT. standards) town. *If* you can comfortably afford Greenwich, it's a nice place. If you can't, you may harbor some resentment if you were to move there, as it truly is an obscenely wealthy enclave. JMHO.

Financial considerations aside, I wonder if the weather would be off-putting...
Coming from CA, you're used to the good stuff. Certainly you're not used to snow and ice. Although Seattle gets a bad rep for having a lot of rain, at least their winters are not quite as cold/snowy/icy as those in CT.
I live in CT now, I spent the first 40 years of my life in Montreal (Canada) -- so I know winters... very, very well -- and since you're coming from CA, I'd choose Seattle.

As others noted, it is hard to compare. Greenwich is one of the most desirable communities in the country. Think a long the lines of Beverly Hills or Palm Beach. It is a very wealthy and very expensive area. If the job is in Greenwich and is high-paying, I would definitely prefer to live there. If the job is just an average IT job, well I would think twice. Home prices in Greenwich are very high and the towns surrounding it are not much better. They are among the wealthiest and pricest places to live. To find affordable housing, your husband would have to commute a good distance which would be difficult since traffic in this area is pretty bad during peak hours. There are trains to Greenwich which helps though.
As for fitting in, Greenwich is a fairly diverse community so that should not be a problem. People are also pretty respectful of political beliefs. I hope this helps. Good luck, Jay
