Connecticut ties for second thinnest state
"Colorado had the lowest rate of obese adults, about 19 percent, followed by Massachusetts and Connecticut at just over 21 percent."
It's quite scary that a 21% obesity rate is so low when compared nationally. I can't say that I'm surprised Connecticut ranks one of the fittest.

I'm surprised, since we have a lot of bakeries and fattening foods.

I'm not:
1) Hi income usually means low obesity......look at the states with hi obesity. All the rich folks in Fairfield County bring the obesity rate down.
2) I think while it doesn't have the repuation of Vermont or Colorado in this regard, CT's populace has a good deal of an "outdoors" culture (Massachusetts too to some extent). There was another post here a couple of months ago that looked at metros in this regard, and Hartford was #11 overall and the best performing small-mid size metro in that category (Burlington, VT was too small to be rated for it).

I'm not very surprised either. Years ago when Coca-Cola was doing research in order to launch a diet cola (Tab in the early '60s) they picked Nassau County on Long Island knowing that this part of the country was very conscientious with regards to weight. They also knew that diet colas would be more popular in the Northeast and California which is why the product was "tested" in this area.

I see a ton of overweight people out and about in CT. But, as compared to the south, as several have mentioned, (and where I'm from) obesity runs rampant. It's really mind-blowing how overweight people seem to be everywhere down south.
It's those biscuits and gravy, country fried steak, and fried okra! LOL

One does need to take these studies with a grain of salt(not too much, now). This little band of researchers didn't exactly show up at your doorstep and tell you to get on the scale, did they? Were the majority of adults weighed by their doctor in the past year? Doubt it.

Can someone please post the definition of "obese"?
By simple scale standards, I'm overweight at 195/200 at 5'10"/11"...
...But the reality is, I have very little body fat, but a lot of muscle mass.
My doctor says "dont' change a thing" at my yearly checkups and my life insurance company actually reduced my premium after I volunteered/requested a more thorough check up.
BTW, I do agree that we are a fit state, and that most people of "success" are NOT overweight - unless it's 5th generation handed down, sleep till noon every day because the nanny let you money.

The most common definition is: greater than 10 percent over the upper end of your range. I am 5' 7", and my range is 140 - 159 (small frame) according to my doctor's chart. Ten percent over the upper figure would be 176 pounds and over.
I'm just under the midpoint at 148.
