Areas of Trumbull
Hi there -
I live in NY. My husband and I will be moving to Trumbull to live and raise our family. We spent the entire weekend looking at homes; the one we fell in love with is literally two minutes from the Trumbull Mall, and the elementary school that my daughter would attend would seem to be Frenchtown Elementary.
Does anyone know what area this is, or anything about the school? I did my research, and the data I have found rates the school #57 ("ish" - maybe 55) in the state, but that was as of 2007. I'd like more recent data but can't find it. My husband needs to drive to the train in Bridgeport - yet on the other hand, Bridgeport seems to be awfully close to the mall as well. Is this an "undesirable" area? I keep hearing about the "right side" and "wrong side" of the Merritt.
I just want us to be happy about our move to the suburbs and secure about our choice to take our daughter out of private school.
Thanks for your help!

Trumbull is a great town with very good schools. The schools there perform well over the state averages on the Connecticut Mastery and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests. The links below will provide you with more information on schools.

Generally it is best to stay north of the Merritt Parkway, but the neighborhoods to the south of the parkway and west of Main Street are very nice too. Even east of Main Street is nice but note that if you go east of Main and south of the Merritt, there is a public housing project off Reservoir Avenue just over the Bridgeport line that has some issues. I hope this helps. Jay

Thank you Jay. Specifically, the house is on Edison Road,, which is a main road and on our way there from New York was approximately three minutes off of Exit 48 on the Merritt. I need brutal honesty here (and I'm awful with geography, as the GPS was getting us everywhere we needed to go) - where does that put us??
We love the house, but - and if this makes me snobby, so be it - area is important to us. I don't want to move and find that no one will let their children come to our house because its in a "bad" area, and I don't want to have to worry about crime.
I'm not truly worried about the schools being that the system is rated about 20 out of 178 in the state.

I had to laugh a bit when you say "bad" areas of Trumbull. There really are no "bad" areas like most people would think. Just areas that are less desirable than others. Edison Road is north of the parkway and it is a very good neighborhood. The road is pretty busy though. The police department is located on it so there is a lot of police presence. I know someone that has lived off Edison for years and they have no problems. If you can deal with the traffic, it should be fine. Jay

Crime stats for Trumbull are very low. The stats include crime that happens at the mall. You do not need to worry about crime on Edison Rd. Edison Rd is a busy road and I would worry more about traffic, especially considering you have children. If that doesn't bother you, I certainly wouldn't give crime in Trumbull a second thought.
Trumbull is a fantastic place to live. So much is offered for families and children. Parks, pools, recreation is fantastic. People are very friendly, as well. Schools offer many enrichment programs.
There are no "bad" areas of Trumbull. Frenchtown has smaller, older homes and is less affluent than other areas such as Tashua.
Trumbull is a wonderful place to live.

I work in Trumbull and I am very familiar with Edison Rd, I drive it every single day. It's a lovely area. But I wouldn't buy a house here. Much, much, much too much traffic and at too high a rate of speed for me to want to live on this road. I would constantly be worried about my children and would not enjoy never being able to go take a walk on my street. Also getting in and out of the driveway would be an issue for me.
ETA: Even living on a street just off of Edison would bother me. Too difficult to get out onto Edison Rd every day.

Trumbull is a very nice residential town with low crime. Only the neighborhoods south of the Parkway have any kind of bad reputation. As already mentioned though, Edison road is a very busy road, especially if you have children. Something else to consider, should you wish to resell some day, it might be just a little bit harder to sell if you are on a really busy street.

You're fine on Edison. The only drawbacks, as others have indicated, would be a little bit of siren noise, and the traffic. But, i don't feel that the traffic volume on Edison is quite as bad as it's being portrayed. It's a road that mostly locals use to get from Main St. to Church Hill and White Plains Rds. Most people who don't live in Trumbull don't even know it actually exists.

Thanks so much, everyone, for all your input! Our bid on the house was accepted today. There were too many other "pros" to negate the one "con" - which was the traffic.
PS - "Short Sale," my behind. That's an oxymoron.
