Yeah, you are right. But it is hard for us oldtimers (god, am I really saying that I am an oldtimer) see things change. Though these "trophy" homes are nice, the character of the old area says New England not Malibu. I will miss that. Jay

A close family member lives near the university and I have not heard any of this from them or other family/friends in the area. Sorry but you are definitely wrong here. Jay

Just take a look at what Fairfield University publishes in their newspaper. From the last week of the last semester they had one off campus assault and two assaults on campus. They had two burglaries and some vandalism.

The Fairfield Mirror - Campus crime beat 4/30/09

Anyone moving to that area does not want to live close the townhouses on North Benson!!!!!!!!!!

This is your "Tons" of crime??? come on now. A long time ago I went to a small college in a small safe town and this kind of stuff happened there too. Hardly the end of the world type of things. Get real. Jay

Sure here are some more facts as reported by the Campus Newspaper:

Quote:
A frequent conversation that occurs any night of the week at Fairfield usually involves: "Hey man, I'll pre-game in Jogues and then drive down to the suites." It doesn't matter where you live or where you need to go: dorms, village, townhouses or the beach all fit in that sentence.

It is a lie to say that the number of DUIs that Fairfield students receive are proportionate to the number of drunken drivers, and it's also a lie that those caught driving under the influence were first time offenders. DUIs that are off campus have been a concern, especially at the beach.

What about the DUIs on campus?

We all know that at this time of the year that walk to the townhouses seems longer and, unless you've done a few extra shots, a lot colder. Hopping behind the wheel makes a lot of sense, and taking a ride up to the townhouses seems like a great idea; it's safe to say almost everyone manages to get away with it.

This is sounds safe:
Quote:
At 2 a.m. students on the first floor came into the hallway to see a brawl that broke out between four residents and three black non-students males, one of whom carried a loaded handgun.
The three students, identified as Lavon Cobourne, Kareem Boston and Warren Knight, were all charged with third-degree assault and criminal trespassing. Cobourne was also charged with carrying a pistol without a permit.
Two of the suspects, who were taken into custody by the University's Public Safety and the Fairfield Police Department, are believed to have entered the campus on a bus from the New Haven bar called RBAR, early Saturday morning.
According to Public Safety, some of the people involved in the incident had consumed alcohol.
Public Safety Director Todd Pelazza said that one of the suspects attempted to conceal a .22 caliber hand gun as the Public Safety Officers confronted the suspects. The three men were "invited" into the building by residents of the hall.

Best be carefull driving/walking in that area between Thursday and Sunday:

Quote:
However, it may be that since the basement lock-up, more students are traveling to the beach at night to avoid Public Safety's reign over on-campus parties. This, in turn, creates more risks and proposes larger questions, such as preventing drinking and driving. It is also possible that safe transportation from students from the beach to campus at night could eventually exist. Questions like these, especially since the drunken driving accident at the beach when student Jack Cleverley '10 was sent to the hospital, should be increasingly addressed by administration and students alike.
www.fairfieldmirror.com/editorial-a-prime-time-for-discussion-1.822943

Quote:
Sophomore Jack Cleverley, a member of the men's soccer team, was struck by a car driven by fellow Fairfield student Matthew Robert Velky '10, who was driving under the influence. Cleverley suffered multiple injuries, but luckily is in stable condition now.

This accident was just one of multiple incidents that occurred at the beach this weekend. Early Sunday morning, two cars collided outside of Bravo Restaurant, including a Jeep Cherokee holding 10 Fairfield students, sending eight people to the hospital.

Gee, a fight on campus, kids from out of town coming on campus, and a couple DUI's. A real crime ridden area!!!

This has gone way off topic now and will not be allowed to go on under this thread. Jay

Politricks, I feel, has only negative comments for Fairfield. Although I don't live in the University area, I know it is considered to be extremely desirable, especially among families. I don't think a dangerous area would be in high demand among families with rather large budges to spend on homes. I'm sure politricks would find something negative about Greenfield Hill or Southport (impossible!!!) given the chance...
