west hartford to southington?
Hi! We just moved to West Hartford from San Diego 6 months ago and love it in West Hartford, however, we are considering a move to Southington to be closer to my husbands work (Wallingford) and to make our dollar stretch further when buying a house next year. I haven't been to Southington yet but was wondering what the pros and cons of it are and if there is a huge difference between the two towns. I don't particularly like the "status" thing of living in West Hartford. We are in our late 30's and have two small children so schools are very important to us. Thanks so much for any advice/suggestions!

My impression of WH is such that, while its schools are very good and there is no shortage of things to do within the town, it is congested and somewhat "snooty". Housing prices and the overall cost of living are some of the highest in the Hartford metro area.
Southington seems like a more appealing place to live. You have much of the retail that WH has to offer (well, except for Trader Joe's), along with significantly lower housing costs. Southington schools are right on par with WH schools. Southington has more open space, and less traffic congestion (aside from the Queen St. retail area). You have very good freeway access in Southington (84/691), and are a 30 minute commute to both the New Haven and Hartford metros.

Southington
You can't go wrong with Southington('south of farmington'). Both Southington and West Hartford have their status in CT

Southington's schools are quite good. It's a nice middle-class area, and yes, I agree that you will get MUCH more house/land in Southington than WH for your dollar! However, if you really like WH's downtown, keep in mind you won't find anything like that in Southington. WH is one of the few towns in the area with a walkable, vibrant, "trendy" center. Southington has more chains, strip malls, and big box stores, but if that kind of stuff doesn't bother you, you would probably enjoy the town a great deal.

Waterbury? New Britain? Did you actually read the original post in its entirety?!! The original poster needs a good school system. Would you want to send your kids to school in those chaotic environments?
Hamden/Middletown are hardly great, either.
Rocky Hill, Guilford, Madison, Durham & Berlin would be solid choices.
