Probably the least expensive place to live is northeastern Connecticut. The towns along I-395 like Plainfield are about 2 hours away without traffic. With traffic during rush hour is a whole different story. Another area to consider would be Winsted or Torrington. They would be about an hour and a half without traffic. Jay

Northeastern Conn. is the cheap spot, especially along I-395. But it makes zero sense to commute from there to Norwalk. You either couldn't afford the commute to consider a job in Norwalk, or you could afford better closer.
I live in the northeast, and with no traffic it's about two hours to Norwalk. But I wouldn't bother. None of the cheap cheap spots are that great, especially if you have kids in schools. And the nicer towns are matched elsewhere in the state.

Do you realize that with the exception of the farthest corners, the entire state is within a 2 hour drive?

Odd choice, but I thought of East Haven - this is only if you don't have children to put in school. They have a great publicly funded school called East Haven Academy, but you have to apply to be accepted and I'm not sure what the criteria is... but not everyone gets in.
Otherwise you could probably get something by the water, even, for not too much. You'd be close to New Haven on one side of you, and Branford on the other. Branford has some new constructions starting at $350k actually, depending on what you're looking for; you didn't mention if you want to rent or own. Renting, I'd say go for New Haven.

i have a few friends who are renting houses on the water in Milford.
if you look in Bridgeport, i'd recommend the Black Rock section of BPT.
