Which public, private or independent schools in CT teach French as part of the curriculum? We would like to look into elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. Right now, our kids are in 2nd grade and 6th grade. So far, we found a public elementary school in West Harford, one in Kent and an independent school in West Simsbury. Can you think of another one? Please consider that we are Southington, so the commute needs to be reasonable... ;-)
Thanks in advance
Mel
Fairfield County schools offer Spanish and French from middle school through high school. I am assuming it would be the same for Hartford County and New Haven County schools, as well.
Two people told me just today that due to budget cuts, all foreign languages have been cut from Monroe middle schools.
In Monroe, 7th - 12th grades have both French and Spanish offered. 5th and 6th grade did away with the introductory foreign language electives. The 5th/6th grade school is now called Chalk Hill Upper Elem. School and is no longer classified as a middle school.

Yay! I'm glad to hear that Chalk Hill isn't a middle school anymore. I really didn't like the way they used to run it.
As for the foreign languages at Jockey Hollow, that's strange, since one of the moms I spoke to has a child at JH. But there are so many rumors running rampant in Monroe over the recent budget cuts, that maybe it was just that, another rumor that I heard. Thanks for clarifying.

Actually since school boards are locally run you cannot make a blanket statement like this. i.e. Wilton (part of Fairfield County) exposes children to both spanish and french in 3rd grade, then can select on or the other to continue in grades 4 to 8. Once in HS the options are expanded.

Right...I was stressing the bare minimum. Spanish and French are offered in 7th and 8th grades throughout the state in public schools. Some of the schools only offer it in 7th grade to students that have excelled academically. Others start in 8th grade.
You are correct though, there are a lot schools that offer much more!
I remember something last year in the papers that a lot of towns are thinking about phasing out french in favor of offering chinese language skills as the next step in preparing kids for a global economy. I know that Seymour considered this, but french is still in for now. Personally I think it should stay in the budget everywhere.
Where are you looking? I believe most public high schools should still teach French in the state, though it is probably not as ubiquitous as Spanish.
