Default Public, Private or Independent schools that teach French

Hello,

Which public, private or independent schools in CT teach French as part of the curriculum? We would like to look into elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. Right now, our kids are in 2nd grade and 6th grade. So far, we found a public elementary school in West Harford, one in Kent and an independent school in West Simsbury. Can you think of another one? Please consider that we are Southington, so the commute needs to be reasonable... ;-)

Thanks in advance
Mel

I don't know about elementary schools so much, but I do know that quite a lot, if not most, public schools in the state offer french programs from 6th grade all the way up. I'm not from around that area so I can't really say anything particularly for there, but I do know that is the case for the southeast area.

At my school district (and this was like 7-10 years ago now), it was only 9th grade and up for French. Being a small district was bad enough, demand was also quite low for French and Latin.

They had just introduced Spanish for 8th graders by the time I was graduating HS (six years ago).

This would be a hike for you but was the only thing I could find as most of the private schools in your area are 9-12.
That said, this is a tremendous school; the commute might be worth it (although it appears that you will have to wait until next year to apply for admission.)

If I were you, would also try private schools in western Mass.

The only schools I've ever heard of teaching french are high schools.
Most public HS's have the option of french or spanish.
Teaching french before HS would probably only be done easily with a tutor.

I stand corrected, it seems to be an anomaly outside of this area, but I had to take a semester of french and spanish in sixth grade, and then we had the option of either one for seventh and eighth grade being able to take high school level spanish or french 1 class in eighth grade. Taking foriegn language was part of the sixth grade curriculum and you needed specific permission to be excluded from it.

It is my understanding that some of the elementary schools in Glastonbury offered French while others (including ours) taught Spanish. French is offered to everyone in the middle school though. I am not sure that what is being taught is what you are looking for though. The elementary foreign language program offers minimal introductory instruction. I think private lessons would probably be more productive, though I have been impressed how much my kids have learned from theprograms they have. Jay

The curriculum of public schools in other towns would be a moot point if you're intending to remain in Southington. If you were looking to send your kids to a school outside of your town, you would still be responsible for the full tuition($10-14K) if a public school in another town accepted your child, unless you can find some type of inner-city magnet program that is looking for outside students to balance their diversity level.
