Default Where to live if you work in Shelton?

We may have a job opportunity in Shelton, CT. Where would a young family move that wouldn't have a horrible commute, good schools, and be able to find a nice house for under 400k (we have about 125k for a downpayment) and live on a salary of 150k? I would have to find a new job - so I also would need to be near a city with some career opportunituies (I am assuming Stamford, New Haven, Hartford). We have family on Long Island, and would like to be able to see them frequently - so I am guessing we would want to be in the southern part of the state. Someone mentioned Trumbull to me - is that a good place to start? Thank you.

A lot will depend on what you expect to get for $400k and how developed a town you want. In Trumbull, which is a great town, you will not get a lot. It is an affluent suburban community with houses selling for $350k and up.

You would get a little more in Monroe or Oxford. For a more developed area, try Milford. Even Shelton itself is nice and has homes in your price range. Jay

Trumbull is a nice town but you won't get much for your money. I'd suggest Oxford as well, though it's getting quite expensive there - good market to buy in though and you get more land for your money there. I visited Oxford a few weeks ago when I came back to CT (I used to live in Shelton) and it really is beautiful in Quaker Farms. There was a front page article I came across online printed in yesterday's paper (Sunday the 20th) that really outlines what Oxford has become and why it is so popular with young, higher income families who seek good schools. Check it out:

Milford and Shelton are a little different than Oxford and Monroe, so keep this in mind when searching. The latter are woodsy/mostly residential, while Milford and Shelton have large shopping areas (especially Milford) with quite a bit of traffic. They are both closer to big box shopping, while in Oxford and Monroe, you might have to travel 10 minutes to get to what you need. Just wanted to point that out.
