Rt 6 to 395. I drive about 45-50 on 6 and about 70 on 395. I took the trip once on a Saturday afternoon and it took no longer than 40 minutes.

If you look it up on Mapquest, it says 49 minutes which calculates going 35mph on back roads and 55 on highways, so it's bound to be less. It's not a quick drive, but to have it take an hour (or even 50 minutes) you must be going well under the speed limit or caught in some kind of unusual traffic.

I think we're getting off topic anyway.

LindaGlover is on a distinguished road
I lived in the "quiet corner" of CT for 18 yrs and it is just that...quiet. I've been gone for many years, continue to visit friends and family and it has not gained a bit of motivation. It is as quiet as the day I left. Nothing wrong with the area, it is still home to me where I was born and raised with fond memories, but very quiet with little to do.
Living in Boston as you have it will be a big shock going from 1 extreme to another unless you are wanting to do that for a particular reason.
Maybe the coast line or bigger town for more to do will be a happy median.

Good luck with your decision making!

I'm curious, is the NE corner loyal to BOS more than NY, or both, and how come given it's only 60 miles to BOS, 30 to Hartford, it isn't more developed?

The 'quiet corner' has changed some; I think LindaGlover has missed some things going on in the states North east and eastern corner- being away for so long, she has missed some of the more subtle changes.

Firstly the states eastern section is seeing some what of a 'renaissance'.
This has been primarily based on newcomers from the northeast corridor, California, Florida and even the Gulf coast. The first two are urban burnouts, seeking peace and solitude, and cheap housing, with quick and easy access to the ocean, Providence, Hartford and Boston. The others are burned out by the threat of hurricanes and the crime and growing congestion of Florida.

Also the 'quiet Corner' is seeing an influx of celebrities. John Travolota has had an estate in Windham county for years. Harrison Ford has a large estate near Pomfret. There are others as well.

There are new homes being built in Coventry, Willington, and Stafford Springs.
Pomfret and even Putnam are seeing more construction. Commercially, the region still has rather limited shopping facilities. There is a small indoor Mall in Willimantic- and Norwich has ample shopping. But I think the 'escapees' to the region would prefer it to keep the low key character. While the area is not seeing widespread growth- most longterm residents complain about the changes now happening, and want to limit further growth in housing subdivisions and commercial development.

I see you are from Vernon, CT, Rein's deli.

When going to Boston on I-84 it seems Vernon is ground zero between metro Hartford, suburbs, and rural CT.
It also seems that once you pass Vernon, everything aligns with Boston in terms of climate.

For instance in the fall or spring Hartford to Vernon's leaves are all turning the same time, but it's like the second you pass Vernon there's nothing on the trees through Boston, very weird how sudden the change happens.

Vernon, in fact is on the border of the so called ''quiet corner"
Just travel two exits up I 84 and it becomes wooded, hilly and rural. I guess Vernon is the end of the sprawl east from Hartford.

Climate wise, Vernon will be warmer then Boston in the sumer, simply because Boston has the nearby cooling breezes off Massachusetts bay. This is true especially in the spring to about early July. In the winter Boston may again be a tad warmer because of the nearby moderating influence of the bay and ocean. Snow wise its a toss up.

My dad has always been devoted to Boston teams, even after moving to Myrtle Beach. Anyone I associated with was for Boston, but that is not to say everyone was or is.

As for the developement of 'quiet corner', which I consider to be Windham County, many of the large industries have closed down. American Standard was a big one that closed it doors many years ago, and many residents moved out including my parents. Many industries and mills have been sitting empty. Many people travel to Groton, Hartford, Providence, etc. to work that still live in this location.

Pomfret is one town that is seeing growth. It has always had a little more going on. The reason for this is there are private boarding schools located there and it has drawn students from all over the country. As everything else, word gets out, it is a private secluded area that most people with money are looking for, so they are slowing moving in and building these estates. One of the 1st large estates was "Gulden's" back in the 50's, so Pomfret has been known for estates for many years as well as Woodstock. It is also where the hospital is located so it is drawing medical staff in as well.

FYI

In the Hartford Courant this morning, between now and 2030, Windham and Middlesex counties will see the most population growth.
