Always thought Hammonasset Beach, or NH/Middlesex County border was the line - to the east majority Sox, to the west majority Yankees. Though part of the issue is Middlesex is somewhat unpopulated, making it hard to determine precisely. If Westbrook was more developed and had 50,000 people like Milford, a preference one way or the other would be far more noticeable, because NH County is clearly Yank, NL County Sox.
Noticeable Sox minority begins around West Haven, although agree it's a minority.
Interestingly, the Qunnipiac survey found more Sox fans in Fairfield Co than Met fans. So the Queens team is a distant #3 in CT.

First off, in general, the Yankees are more popular than the Mets to begin with.
Second, north of the City is generally Yankees anyway. Most of the Mets base is in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. Part of it (though this is has mostly passed as it is 50 years ago) is a large number of old Brooklyn Dodger fans in those areas who hated the Yankees, and perhaps passed it on to a generation or 2. But more likely is whether you have to deal with the cost and extra traffic of a toll bridge to go to a game. My parents were Mets fans who were originally from Brooklyn, but because we lived in Westchester we tended to go to Yankee games and I became a Yankee fan (being a kids in the late 70s when they were winning World Series and the Mets were losing 100 games/year factored in too).
I'm surprised the Red Sox would be higher than them in Fairfield (my nephew who lives in the town of Fairfield is a Mets fan), but thought I'd note this.

I'm not surprised that the Sox beat the Mets - simply because those who aren't Yankees fans, automatically call themselves Sox fans.

When I first got to Danbury, I was quite surprised just how many Red Sox fans there were. I mean it's still like 80-85% Yankees fans. But there was a notable minority of Boston fans down there - enough to feel somewhat comfortable wearing Boston stuff around town.

When I lived in Danbury I noticed this as well. It might have a lot to do with WestConn being in town. A lot of students come from central and eastern CT, some from MA and RI.

Strangely enough, most of the ones I knew from RI and MA that were at WestConn were Yankees fans.

Hmm I went to WCSU and that was definitely not true when I attended. You could tell who was from "east of the river", as they called it, meaning the Connecticut River. Actually, nearly 100% of those I knew from MA, RI were Sox fans. One kid from Dedham was an Angels fan (random, huh?).

I did not know many from Mass. There was one I knew of from North Shore suburb (forgot which one) who was a definite Sox fan. The one from Dudley was a Yankees fan meanwhile. There was one from North Attleboro, but I forgot what she liked. And then there were quite a few who were apathetic to it all.
However those from RI I knew, the few I did, were from South County. Rhode Island seems to have a fair number of Yankees fans, especially in certain areas and/or ethnic groups. They all seemed to fall on the Yankees side.

The latest Quinnipiac actually had the Mets re-claiming #2 from the Sox in Fairfield, but by just 5 % points. Statewide, it was Yankees 42%, Sox 38%, Mets 9%, Other 11%. In '03 it was 47-33 Yankees, so the line has definitely shifted west.
2009:
Fairfield - 52 NYY 16 Bos 32 Other
NH/Middlesex - 48 NYY 31 Bos 21 Other
Litchfield - 41 Bos 32 NYY 27 Other
Hartford - 53 Bos 37 NYY 10 Other
Tolland, Windham, NL - 59 Bos 28 NYY 13 Other
Connecticut (CT) Poll * June 1, 2009 * Yankees Bump Sox Out Of Top Sp - Quinnipiac University – Hamden, Connecticut

Actually there are VERY few Red Sox fans in Western CT.
I see about the same amount of Red Sox fans in Western CT as I do Steelers and Cowboys fans.
That tells me that people here who root for the Red Sox do so NOT because they are the "local" team and because "Boston" has a stake in this region (laughable that some town 4 times smaller and 4 times further away would have the audacity to think that just because CT is part of New England it would go for them....CT is just as much Tri-State NY) but because they are bandwagoners.
Is a Steeler fan in Shelton mean Shelton is part of the PIT market?
Nope.
Same thing with the Red Sox.
Bandwagoners.
