Default moving to work at Yale New Haven Hospital

My wife and I will be moving from Toronto-Canada to New Haven. I will be working at the Yale-New Haven Hospital starting next summer. We are looking for a quiet and nice neighborhood close to the hospital (10-15 min commute). What would be a good time to start searching for accommodations for rent and where? Are Westville and East Rock good places to start searching in?

If you are planning to rent, you should do some research to inform your decisions. However, you may not yet be able to find the exact building/home that will be open when you move.

Do you want to be in the city of New Haven? Westville and the East Rock neighborhoods are good places to start looking.

If you do not want to be in the city of New Haven (e.g., if you have children who will be in public school), you could live in Hamden, Milford, or Orange, within 15 minutes of YNHH. These offer more suburban living and much better public schools.

East Rock you might be OK until high school. Worthington Hooker ES/MS is a pretty unique place within the New Haven school system and very diverse (as in a mix of everybody, not as in being "all minority") and has a decent reputation.

If I were moving from that far away, I would probably rent for the first year so you can get a flavor for what you really want. In my opinion, North Haven and Branford are both very nice towns, decent schools, shopping, etc. Both about 15 minutes away from Yale not taking traffic into consideration, which can be bad depending on the time you are commuting. Branford is a town on the Long Island Sound and is probably a little more pricey than North Haven. Good luck!

I agree with tree6199 that Branford and North Haven are nice towns that you should consider. However, only count on a 15-minute commute from Branford if you'll be taking the train. Congestion on I-95 during commuting hours is heavy, especially east of New Haven. There are many rental options in Branford, and the town has a very high quality of life, so it is certainly worth considering.
