Moving To Greenwhich.
Hello,
My fiance and I are moving to greenwhich. We need a neutral point to commute to NY and Hartford. She will be traveling to NY and I would like to know what are some other options besides driving to Hartford each morning to work. Any ideas/info would be great.
Thx
Nate

Other than driving, which would probably take 2 hours each way, you could go to Stamford, either by train or car, and then take Amtrak to Hartford. This would be at least a 2 hour trip each way, and it will cost a lot to commute.
Greenwich really isn't a middle point between NYC and Hartford. Your fiancee will have a 35 minute commute while your commute will be at least 2 hours.
I worked in NYC and my husband worked in Hartford. We lived in South Norwalk. I took the train into Manhattan and he drove to Hartford. It took him an hour and fifteen minutes to commute each way. When the weather was bad, it could take 2-3 hours. I'd suggest living somewhere more in the middle than Greenwich unless you don't mind commuting for at least four hours per day.

Very good to know. Very helpful thank you. My commute to Hartford would definitely be a hassle especially in winter times. Thx for the info.
How is Greenwhich? Is it a lively city. Enterntainment etc....I know the cost of buying a home is up there but seems like a pleasant place to live.

I agree that there are other towns that are located more in the middle between New York and Hartford and since Greenwich is probably the most expensive town in the State, they would be more affordable. You should be aware that your commute through Stamford would not be pleasant even when the weather is good. I would recommend living east of Stamford to avoid that problem. Towns such as Darien, Westport and Fairfield would give you a much easier commute to Hartford.
If you can afford the housing prices and don't mind the commute, Greenwich is a wonderful town. It is considered one of the country's premier affluent suburbs, up there with Beverly Hills and Palm Beach. They have a great central business district with a LOT of upscale stores and restaurants and it is easy to get into midtown Manhatten for the beast in cultural arts. This is the reason it is soooo expensive. Good luck, Jay

Check out Fairfield. It's a nice town about 45 mins from Manhattan and about 60 mins from Hartford. You'd both have similar commuting times.
If you want more info on Fairfield, there are plenty of threads on the town that you can search for.

I agree that Fairfield, or any town east of Stamford, would be a better commute to Hartford. By train, Fairfield is about 75 minutes from Manhattan.

There are a couple of express commuter trains that will get you to Manhatten in an hour from Fairfield. Plus Fairfield is building a new train station on the east side that will have 1,500 parking spaces. Will be a welcome addition to town. Fairfield is a great town. Lots of great shops, restaurants and entertainment. Fairfield Center has a small locally run movie theater which is the center of a nice small central business district. Great for walking around. There are also several beaches and a lot of nice parks. housing is a bit pricey but if you can afford Greenwich, you can certainly afford Fairfield.
PS - What I meant by my post on commuting through Stamford was that there is a lot of traffic going into Stamford in the morning and you will have to battle it if you live in Greenwich and commute ot Hartford. If you move east of Stamford you do not have that problem. Jay

Commute to NYC & Hartford
You might also consider towns to the north and slightly east of Greenwich; while this will increase your fiance's commuting time it should lessen yours considerably. You have to keep in mind that you will most likely want to commute by car as rail service to Hartford from the area you are considering is spotty at best. I suggest you look at Ridgefield, Redding, Weston as well as Fairfield. All the towns have websites usually with addresses like
www.ridgefieldct.org for example.

Most of the trains from Fairfield to Grand Central are approximately 75 minutes. There are 3 morning trains, all before 6:15 a.m., which are slightly under 70 minutes. The majority of the trains are between 70 and 80 minutes. That's still not that bad of a train commute.
