South Windsor may be a good fit for you and your family. Even thou it is still in Hartford county, the rating territory for auto insurance is slightly lower as oppose to W Hartford and Windsor. As far as home insurance, all mentioned areas are generally the same; just make sure your home is within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant for the best possible rating

Canton is a nice choice, but in general, its a step down from Avon and Simsbury in terms of character, schools, recreation, ease of access/commuting, and overall appeal. However, you will find more affordable housing in Canton. Simsbury and Avon also have very strong town leadership with great town planning, which Canton has lacked - this is important because if you like Simsbury or Avon, you can be confident its going to stay that way for the foreseeable future. If you have a choice of towns, Simsbury or Avon are the way to go.

I dont agree with the PP, Canton is very charming especially the village of collinsville. The river runs right along there with a section of the farmington river paved walking trail. The bakery there smells great and its a neat section of town. It is upscale as is Avon and Farmington and the schools are good.

I disagree that Canton is a step down from Avon or Simsbury. I don't think it has the preppy feel of those two towns but it's still a charming place - especially Collinsville. There's a reason why Collinsville was recently named one of the Top 10 Coolest Villages in the USA.
Avon = great town planning? I can't think of any other town in Farmington Valley that has given way to sprawl as much as Avon has. There used to be a TON of open space and, of course, in the name of "progress" this has been turned into lawns. Canton residents recently defeated a proposal to build a Lowes in town because they didn't want the traffic and the malling of the landscape that would later result. IMO, Canton is a smaller version of Simsbury - a nice, picturesque town with a small downtown area that's grown over the years but also has preserved a lot of open space.

Canton really missed the mark with The Shoppes at Farmington Valley. What an ugly center this turned out to be. The town kept pushing developers to make the site tighter and tighter and do things that made it what it is today. Sorry but this was not good planning. It is uglier than anything I have seen in Avon recently. That said I hope they learned their lesson and will work with future developers to improve aesthetics overall. JMHO, Jay
