Thank you once again for voicing what I wish I had the knowledge and passion to do so myself.
Since I live a mere 7 blocks from the (former) World Trade Center, and was home that fateful day... and I knew in my bones that the air was unbreathable for many many days (and probably still is) after... and the EPA totally lied to everybody (thank you, Christine Whitman) just a few days after about it being "safer than safe" (not a direct quote, so nobody dig for it) ....
I completely mis-trust "experts" hired by "the state" -- because I know all about golf club parties and trips to the Islands. We were all told to "go shopping" whereas we should have been told to get as far away from town as possible for a long, long time.
If we don't have our hunches, best-construed knowledge, and life-long experience for basing "trust" on -- then there are certainly at least 2 different worlds we inhabit.
Okay you both don't trust "hired" sources.
So what do you make out of the all volunteer CRWC that does scientific water tests twice a week?
Are they in the tank too?
Myself and thousands of others will enjoy the river, you both can wring your hands on shore...I'll be sure to wave as I cruise by on the jetski.
P.S. Wave, no need to dig at the R vs D thing...my comment was made because you had a Republican Governor and our ever camera loving Eternal...er, Attorney General (Democrat) both in that article posturing for camera/press time. Hence the "riddled with political posturing" comment on my part. Let it go sometimes. Seriously.
"Myself and thousands of others will enjoy the river, you both can wring your hands on shore...I'll be sure to wave as I cruise by on the jetski."
Perfectly priceless, and couldn't have been said better.
The invention of the JETSKI is what I consider to be one of the most hideous in modern time. I spend a lot of time on the beach in several states and areas. And nothing is more repulsive than being roused from the hypnotism of the waves than that repulsive ear-shattering growl of the aggressive jetski.
It's the recreational twin to cigars: maybe great (hard to imagine) for the person riding or smoking it, but intrusive and obnoxious to nearly everybody else.
We might find clean sand and swimmable water, but you and your pals zipping by on jetskis will be around just often enough to make us wish we weren't there.

Just a few other things to ponder…
First, I have had several interactions with the Connecticut River Watershed Council (CRWC)…and while I came across many (mostly younger and poorer) dedicated people some with (and some without) any type of science/environmental background….I also came across a fair share of posturing baby-boomers who only are part of CRWC for social status or influential/economic reasons. Some of these folks are quite dangerous in an “environmental sense”. You can flame me (I think that’s what you youngsters call it)…but that has been my experience with CRWC, CREPA, and several others.
Next, I didn’t say that anyone who rides a jetski on the Connecticut River (and I don’t know if that type of craft is even legal on all sections of the river)…is in harms way in terms of environmental risks. Most boaters, jetskiers…etc, will “likely” have little health risks from that type of interaction in/on the water in the short term. However, if I had a friend who was a pregnant woman for example (because a fetus is more susceptible to environmental conditions), or young children…I would error on the side of caution in repeated/constant swimming close to the site of any former nuclear site.
Finally, in the R vs D thing...you do seem to throw a few stones then seem shocked when one come back over the fence (lol). To tell you the truth, I do not really consider myself a “D” person as you put it. However, in working/watching earth science/environmental issues for 20 years…I have seen how the environment has suffered greatly in the name of capitalism. The “D” people seem to have a pretty bad record of environmental protection…however the “R” people seem like don’t give a d”” at all about environmental issues. I probably won’t live to see it (maybe you will)…but someday soon they’ll do something to the environment that will have quick, SEVERE, short term consequences…that are unfixable. That’s when the fun will really start.
Who knows…maybe that will be the last great American image…all the “R” and “D” people just sitting there and screaming up at the sky….

What one person considers "ear shattering" ("Ear shattering", really?)and "repulsive", and "agressive" may be the complete opposite to someone else.
I find them non of the above, nor do I find your "description" accurate - more of an attack on something you don't like...and for the record I don't own a Jetski, I have a boat but I also have no problem with someone on a jetski using public spaces to enjoy their freedoms as can you.
Our family has a beach house on the Clinton Harbor...it's very shallow, and in fact I can't bring my boat into shore or very far outside of the channel actually. Most of the residents in the neighborhood own a jetski for that very reason. We all seem to be just fine with it. No complaints ever raised at the association meetings.
National seashores usually have a ban on anything "motorized" if that's what you are looking for.
A Jetski, particularly the large 3 seaters are a great way to explore the CT river as they have a very shallow draft. The latest models use 4 stroke engines with catalytic converters and are very low emission crafts. (Although Bombardier has a new two stroke out that is actually cleaner than the 4 strokes) They also adhere to strict noise standards and are FAR from "ear shattering"
I'm not really sure what the CT river life has of interest to someone living in NYC though. Care to explain?
Have you actually ever sat on the CT river in East Haddam and watched the Jetskis and boats go by? Have you ever been to the dock in Deep River and fished? It's not Atlantic City, trust me.
Here is a video of "a boat" up near the Wethersfield cove (On the river), along with a jetski pulling a skier.
