Default Zeroing in on neighborhoods in Stamford

Can anyone suggest nice neighborhoods in Stamford accessable to the Merritt, where a single family home can be had for $800K - $1M, and where there is possibility of walking to coffee shops, etc.? Looking for a community feel as opposed to just a pretty house somewhere.
Pluses: mature trees, local library branch. Please also mention any with crime issues to stay away from. Thanks!!

errr not really...have you been to Stamford? It's a very spread out city, with the "best" houses/neighborhoods probably considered to be in North Stamford. There will be no walking anywhere though in No. Stamford. I can only really think of Springdale, but again it's not very walkable if you don't live right in the center of it, which is going to probaby be under your price range, smaller lots, older houses etc.

I am not sure what you expect to get for your price but have you considered neighboring Greenwich, Darien or New Canaan. These towns are pricey but they do have the walkable village atmosphere you are looking for. Check out downtown Darien or Noroton Heights for listings. In this market you might be surprised what you will get for your money. Jay

Must take "umbrage" at the impression of Stamford. I have lived here for 30 years and brought up 3 kids here and I am realtor. This is a very diverse small city. Lately the most sought after homes are not in North Stamford (unless you want over one acre of land to tend) but in the Westover and Newfield areas, both of which are south of the Merritt. Westover boarders the Greenwich side of Stamford and is a quick drive to the main train station and downtown. The neighborhoods are walkable, though residential. The Newfield area encompasses Pepper Ridge and Upper Newfield. You can walk the neighborhood, as well as to a branch of our library, and many of the schools.
Whatever you do, take your time getting to know our city. Its been great to my family!!

Has the city installed sidewalks in these neighborhoods? I've always understood the neighborhoods around Westover Rd., West Hill and Stillwater Rd. to have poor walkability.

Turn of River(i.e.: Talmadge Ln., Intervale, Gaxton, Joan) might have something for you. That's really about it though, based on your specific criteria.

There are some very nice small neighborhoods in the area between bulls head and downtown. Kind of east of Ridgeway Shopping center in and around the numbered streets. This area would certainly be walkable to downtown, the main library, all the restaurants, etc. There is also Hubbard Heights which would be equally close but on the other side of Ridgeway west of Washington and on the west side of the park. I personally like the first area better than Hubbard Heights. You asked about crime. I don't think there is a crime problem in either area but Hubbard Heights is probably a little closer to sketchyness than the other area. These are downtown neighborhoods that are fairly contained. It would not concern me in the least.

There is also Shippan, which has some very exclusive areas that are walkable to the upper Shippan area where there are some restaurants and shopping etc. Not really as walkable to the main downtown but Shippan is very nice. That said, Shippan is south of 95 so not ideal for a Merritt commute.

Your budget will get you a very nice home in these areas, I am sure.

Previous poster had a good suggestion to also check in the Turn of River area over by Intervale/Cedar Heights around high ridge. Some of those streets are probably walkable to the shopping on High Ridge.

Hubbard Heights and the Revonah area (east of the Ridgeway shopping center) are both lovely central neighborhoods, but Revonah would be better if you wanted to walk places. Fifth, Chester and Urban Streets right off of Bedford have a lot of nice, grand old homes within walking distance to a lot of amenities (granted, they are almost all in the shopping center itself).

Revonah can't be more than a 10 min walk to downtown
