Mobile / Cell Phone Provider for Eastern CT
Hi,
I'm relocating to Eastern CT and will have the rare opportunity to start fresh with a new mobile carrier. I use a mobile 2000+/min and really need the best coverage.
I am currently on Sprint and it has been terrible since we arrived.
I'm most interested in Verizon or AT&T... any thoughts on the best carrier for the Quiet Corner?
Thanks, in adv.
RC

Verizon does better than most of the others. Except for a few spots deep out in the woods like Eastford and Woodstock, it should work alright. AT&T might be ok, but I can't speak much about it. Me and pretty much everyone I know have Verizon. A friend of mine has Sprint, and rarely gets a signal (if at all) in much of Thompson and the towns away from 395.

I'm sure there's AT&T offices in the area, or authorized retailers.
I also saw your other topic about looking for town selection - all of which are further west than what I was originally thinking. The Quiet Corner refers to the far northeast corner of the state: usually Putnam, Killingly, Pomfret, Woodstock, Thompson, Eastford, and Brooklyn. Where I saw you was more looking towards Tolland County and around/west of Willimantic.

Thanks for the clarification on the quiet corner... although this is a pretty quiet place.
as for asking the AT&T dealer... they will undoubtedly have the absolute best coverage... as will verizon at the verizon dealer et al...

Coverage is very...individual. When I first moved to Manfield, I had Sprint. I could look out the window of my office at UConn and SEE THE FREAKIN' TOWER, but half the time, I was forced to roam, because Sprint's signal didn't seem to penetrate my building.
Now I have Verizon. I get good signal at home. My friend who lives a few hundred yards away gets virtually no signal. He's a little lower down, and maybe a little bit out of the sight line of the tower.
You may want to ask, before you sign a contract, whether there is any provision for allowing you to cancel service if the signal does not conform to your needs. I believe Verizon may do this.

My girlfriend's ex has AT&T, lives out in Middlefield and I don't think he ever lost a signal. I have Verizon and if I moved out there, I'd have to get a different carrier. Even driving through the backroads and woods of fairfield and Easton, I barely get service.

My husband and I just relocated to E CT too (near Coventry / Storrs) and had to make the switch from Tmobile, which is terrible here.
We ended up choosing sprint because I liked the plans significantly more than Verizon, and they have decent phones.
That said, we typically have 1-2 bars of service (out of 7) pretty much everywhere, though I haven't had any dropped calls yet. Data and GPS work fine.
Everyone around here recommends Verizon. Both Sprint and Verizon have a CDMA network (digital) while ATT and other carriers use GSM. Thus, hypothetically Sprint can roam on Verizon's network and vice versa as necessary. GSM is not as good in rural areas, so unless you are really stuck on getting an IPhone, avoid AT&T.

Also, re: new phones, you will have 3 days on a contract to decide whether you want to cancel it if you want to avoid activation fees. You can still cancel the overall contract for any reason within 30 days of signing, but will forfeit about $36 in activation fees (individual plan) and your first month of service.
