First time homebuyer here.

My wife and I are looking to buy a multifamily home in CT within the next year. Hopefully by purchasing a multifamily home we'll be able to jumpstart our earnings outside of our careers.

Can anyone tell me if this is a bad area of town to purchase a home?

5 Leuvine Street, Norwalk CT - Trulia

Many thanks.

not familiar with this particular street but it's in the "Hospital area" which is not generally considered to be a bad area. Good for rentals too.

Thanks. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is what this neighborhood known for. Who are the typical residents? Crime? Typical rental candidates? For instance, if I were to buy here and rent to a tenant, would asking for a 600 credit score be an issue?

No sugar coated answers please.

For multi-family homes in Norwalk, I would recommend the East Avenue area. East Ave itself, 1st,2nd, 3rd etc. These are districted for Marvin Elementary and Nathan Hale and schools are really important. Also proximity to the beach make them desirable rentals.

The only area I would avoid in Norwalk is the area around the train station, everything else seems desirable.

You must be talking about the area near the South Norwalk train station. The area near the East Norwalk train station seems OK.

There is a bad area of South Norwalk, and then there are other sections of Norwalk that are marginal, so it depends on your standards and level of tolerance. I don't think I'd buy in the area near the hospital, but that's my personal taste.

Leuvine street is a blue-collar neighborhood. Not one of Norwalk's best neighborhoods, but far from the worst.

Avoid Ely Avenue as well - there are some housing projects on this street, a few blocks away from Main Street where the SoNo revitalization has been going on. It's not the worst public housing complex out there, but for obvious reasons you don't want to be around it.

Hi there. It's not the "best" of areas but definetly worth that price to invest. It's a cute little area there. I made an offer on Maher Drive and June Avenue. I liked the location but didn't like the half million dollar price so I backed out 2 years ago.

Go for it. Good luck and there are plenty of great responsible tenants looking out there.. It's not walking distance to train but greatg location near route 7, I-95, and Merrit and near the main shopping strip.

Have you seen the property yet? You might run into some updating issues.

Thanks everyone for your input.

After some more research I've decided to stay away from the South Norwalk train station (and points south) and focus on areas closer to the East Norwalk station. I'm shooting from the hip here.

Also, I have recently been learning about Section 8 tenants/buildings. My first impression is.....stay away. If you guys have any input on that subject as well, it would be greatly appreciated.
