Four and a half hours sounds about right. We just like being near 84 which makes it an easy shot to 87 or 81 which would take us to Syracuse.

Funny to think about the rural aspect. I'm not sure how removed from things we want to be...but we will probably check out Litchfield County just for comparison's sake.
Cheshire might be a good fit, although I think it may be a little less affluent than you might wish. The reason that I recommend it is b/c it is very close to 84 and 40 minutes to New Haven, which offers a lot of diversity. New York is 1/1/2 hours by train from New Haven. There are also great schools, public and private, in the area (especially in New Haven, which offers The Foote school, High School in the Community and Hopkins, not to mention Yale; Choate is in Waterbury, and Cheshire has Cheshire Academy, as well as good public schools.) Cheshire is not particularly artsy but New Haven is (at least, IMHO). There is also Sleeping Giant State Park [nearby] in Hamden for great hiking.
I also agree re: Litchfield. I also, always, recommend Guilford although it doesn't sound as if it would meet all of your criteria.

Just a note: Choate is in Wallingford, not Waterbury.

Thank you all so much. This is really helping us "discover" some pockets we weren't yet aware of.

I love Guilford. I grew up sailing on the CT side of the Sound. However I feel like that area is too far from Syracuse...Being near New Haven is generally a plus. Would rather be close to there than Danbury as our "bigger city".

Oops, you're right; thanks for the correction. I always get Waterbury and Wallingford mixed up, I have no idea why.
