Commuting to Morristown, NJ from New Haven, CT
Does anyone know the quickest way (using public transit) for a commute from New Haven, CT to Morristown, NJ? It's about the same distance as from New Haven to NYC, I think.

It's much further than the distance from New Haven to New York City.
The only way I can think of is to take some type of New Jersey transit into either Port Authority or Penn Station in New York City. Then you need to take the subway from Penn Station or Port Authority to Grand Central Terminal. At Grand Central, you then take the Metro North New Haven line train to New Haven. The Metro North train alone is 1 hour and 45 minutes. All in, you're looking at 3 hours minimum, each way, probably more. I don't think this is a doable commute.

Morristown is in north central New Jersey on the other side of New York. You would take a train into New York, a subway across town to Penn Station and then catch a train to Morristown. There may even need to be a change made in Newark. I am not sure. The point is that it is a long and difficult trip that you would not want to do everyday. Jay

It's at least 1 1/2 times the commute from NH to NYC. In fact, I personally think even NH to NYC (though some do it) is a long and difficult trip.

Theoretically it is possible, practically it is not especially not with Public Transport.
There are Trains from Penn Station or Hoboken that go to Morristown. BTW you'll need to be more specific since Morristown is a large area. Also there are buses from Port Authority(Lakeland and maybe some NJ Transit).
Easy estimate to the center of Morristown from New Haven = 4 hours each way minimally each way on Public Transport. Also it would be very expensive.
Google Maps estimates 1 hour 45 minutes with no traffic by car and 2 hours 20 minutes with traffic. Also you would be travelling with traffic. BTW I used to live next to Morristown.
Morristown is not very public transport friendly. You'll need a car.

Thank you all for such a prompt reply. I agree that the commute would be hell. Mapquest tells me that a drive is 2 hrs and 20 min. Is that inaccurate.

No that is not inaccurate but the problem is that there are so many congested areas in between that you can not regularly count on how much traffic you will hit. There is traffic going out of New Haven, there is traffic in Fairfield County, there is traffic in Westchester County, there is traffic crossing the bridges and there is traffic in Morris County. You are traveling across and through so many different areas and employment centers, it is really not practical to drive this on a regular basis. Jay

That drive time sounds like it could be accurate (on a good driving day, but maybe not typical rush hour traffic in CT, NY, & NJ.) I'm not sure which way you'd go, but there would be a bridge crossing involved. It's pretty easy to go 95 to 287 and follow 287 over the Tappan Zee and straight into Morristown.
For the train, you'd need to take the train from New Haven to Grand Central, then get over to Penn Station and take NJ Transit out to Morristown. I don't know how long the entire trip takes, but Penn to Mo-town is about an hour and ten minutes or so.
Where in Morristown would you be going? The train station isn't central to everything. There are taxis and some companies have shuttles from the train station. But it's helpful to have a car in that area.
