Default UConn Law School - Where to live? (Hartford)

Hi there
I'm from Chile (South America) and next year I will be there in the LL.M program at UConn.

By the way, I'm married and have two wonderfull girls ... so we all are moving there.

I'm looking for a good neighborhood in Hartford and specially near the School of Law in Uconn... but don't have any idea of wich are good towns or neighborhoods there... are any dangerous? safe to be with my kids and wife?

Dunno where to find a house and besides that I don't know where to find... (any webpage?)

I'm thinking in a walking distance place between my house and the University... or maybe it's better to live in other place and taking the bus or something?

Please, any tip is welcome

Do schools matter to you? Will your children be going to public schools here?
If so, you do not want to live in Hartford itself..

Are you buying or are your renting? Either way, you need to speak to a realtor. I suggest you look into West Hartford even if your kids are not yet of school age. There is a CATS bus route that picks up at Bishop's Corner (at Walgreen's corner of North Main at Rte 44) that stops at the corner of Farmington Avenue and that little street where UConn College of Law is. You will still have to walk and if your classes are at night, that is not exactly the safest place to be. If you speak to a realtor, most of them have a website that also offers rentals. Most rentals in WH are duplexes or in multi-family homes, although with the market as it is, I wouldn't be surprised to find single family homes for rent.

I live in the West End of Hartford which is the neighborhood where the UConn Law School is located. There are a couple of houses for rent in the neighborhood now. If you live in the West End, you should be able to walk to school. There is a magnet elementary school in the neighborhood, Noah Webster, where most children that live in the neighborhood attend.

You might also want to consider West Hartford, which is the town directly to the west of Hartford. The bus service from West Hartford to Hartford is pretty good, so depending on where you would live in West Hartford, you could catch a bus that would take you fairly near the law school. There are routes that run down Asylum Avenue, Farmington Avenue, and Fern Street. Any of those routes would drop you close enough where you could walk to UConn. There are 11 elementary schools in West Hartford, so depending on where you lived in town, your child would attend that elementary school. There are several houses for rent in West Hartford right now.

Just let us know what other questions you have.

Does the school offer any assistance in finding a home? Most schools have a housing office that will at least help you. I agree that you should consider the West End or West Hartford. Jay

Renting.
I suppose that my classes are during the day.

You say that near the School of Law is not very safe?

Thanks

Hartford is a city and it has typical urban issues that are found in any city. The area around the Law School is relatively safe despite what others have posted. Jay

Sorry the question, but Elementary School is the same that Kindergarten or Preschool? I thought that Elementary was for older children... no for 2 years old?

Thanks for the other tips... looks like west hartford would be my neighborhood...

What about the rates? I'm looking for 2 or maybe 3 bedrooms.
